I remember one year they allowed my grandma to go to the furthest point that she could go. They went to search her purse, and she forgot she had these mini scissors in a part of her purse she doesn't use much. The guy acted all dramatic, and was like m'am don't touch the purse. A woman comes over, and starts acting more dramatic than him, and says you aren't suppose to have these. They threw them away, and let us pass. I guess they don't get much action, lol. I traveled earlier this year when they weren't getting their paychecks, and this one agent was an idiot. You could tell he was in a bad mood. I just ignored the donkey, and smiled the whole process. You live, and you learn. I would be mad too if they did that to my stuff. Some function like robots, just do what they are told, and have no emotion/empathy.

My mom accidentally brought her gun with her going through security. They just had her put it in a locker in like a basement area.

We shouldn't tolerate this. Fuck the TSA, being useless would be a giant step up for them. They should be abolished in entirety without replacement.

sounds safe

It is safe. TSA does nothing to prevent anything. It's all security theater, not actual security.

Itd be a drastically more dangerous world but okay.

I'm not so convinced. I honestly don't believe the TSA is particularly effective. If you've flown a lot and always pack the exact same things, it's mind boggling the inconsistency with when things get flagged vs when they don't. My bag, which almost always contains the exact same things, gets flagged like 20% of the time.

I know people who have accidentally left hunting knives in their carry on bag and didn't realize it until they got to the hotel at their destination. TSA completely missed it.

And I'm pretty sure there have been multiple undercover attempts by Homeland Security to test how much they could get past the TSA, and it's always just a ridiculous number of things. So they really aren't as effective as we're lead to believe.

Not to mention what theyre looking for will be attached to the passport/background of the person, and not the luggage. Anything anyone wants to use to wreak havoc can be purchased once theyre in the country.

I went to the Penn and Teller show in Vegas a couple years back and they talked a ton of shit about the TSA, and even showed off plastic knives they had that were virtually undetectable but sharp enough to kill someone.

The key word in "terrorist" is "terror". They don't necessarily want to kill large numbers of people. They want to inflict fear. They want you to go to bed afraid that it could happen again. And as long as this nonsense continues, the terrorists are still winning.

I have a "CIA Letter Opener" that I bought decades ago. I bought it from a regularly available mail-order catalog. It's made of impact resistant plastic with a blade about 3 inches long. The edges aren't sharp enough to cut anything thicker than paper and couldn't hold an edge even if you tried, but the point is sharp enough and hard enough to stab through 1/4 inch plywood. It's completely undetectable by X-ray, body scanner or metal detector.

It seems illegal.

It probably is, but who's going to take the government to court for trying to intercept turrurists?

You should file for damages though.

It's not illegal and you would get absolutely nowhere with a lawsuit. You have no legally mandated right to air travel; it's a privilege and you voluntarily surrender some of your rights - like the right against unreasonable search and seizure - when you purchase your ticket. Every airline I've ever flown with that goes through the US pretty explicitly states in the "Checked Baggage" section to leave your luggage unlocked, because the TSA can search it for any reason at all and they have the authority to break any locks they encounter on the luggage or on anything within it.

So buy a cheap gun just to stick in your luggage so you can supervise the TSA's search of it. An interesting solution indeed.

Doesn't seem particularly effective at solving the original problem though.

Even if TC was there for the search, they still would have demanded to open and go through the books. I'm honestly not sure what the policy would be at that point if you tried to stop them.

Unless, of course, your plan is to hope they just won't search your bag because it's way more of a hassle for them. Or you're really really concerned about replacing a cheap luggage lock.

You'd be amazed at how far "it's too much of a hassle" will get you with security.

I'm a martial arts instructor and I used to travel with illegal weaponry in my checked baggage. Not "illegal" as in "you're not allowed to fly with this"; "illegal" as in "I shouldn't be allowed to have this at all." Every time I got asked about it (which only happened about half the time), all I had to say was that I was a martial arts instructor on the way to a training course and they'd wave me through. One guy hilariously told me that I should carry a copy of my black belt certificate with me when travelling, before pawing past two illegal weapons in my suitcase and saying "otherwise, I'd probably have to seize those" while pointing at my sai (a completely legal and unrestricted weapon that you can buy at any martial arts supply store). After that encounter, I'd just show security a photo of my black belt "diploma", which was a generic certificate that anyone could get printed up at a print store, given that there is no national accreditation board for black belts (also, it was entirely in Japanese, so it could have been a recipe for ramen for all any of the security staff knew) and that was good enough to forestall any further questioning.

I did eventually have to stop doing that when I ran into a security guy who was a little more on the ball than most and came close to seizing the illegal stuff I was carrying. He also bought the "martial arts instructor" excuse, plainly because he didn't want to have to fill out the paperwork for seized items, but it was a closer call than I was comfortable with. Also I'd moved in recent years, meaning it was easier to drive to the seminars I usually attended, so I just stopped flying with my gear. In my defence, I find it incredibly stupid that some of my training weapons are banned despite the fact that I live in a country where firearm ownership is legal.

No idea why everyone here slams Adam Ruins Everything. Sure, the show has gotten a few things wrong before, but so has pretty much any fact proving show. Also, they have admitted to their mistakes and even did episodes where they correct themselves. Also, they're like the only fact proving show that puts references on the episodes so you can fact check them.

It's like only idiots oppose that show, because they don't want to be proven wrong.
