Like as if in 20+ years if you want to play that game you aren't;
- Buying a digital copy so you can play it in a more convenient fashion on your modern aming device because it doesn't read Blu-rays and your TV isn't designed for old consoles anymore and the PSN/Live servers are shut down
- Playing the game on PC

You need to be a pretty committed to play retro games in a good or authentic standard. Are you like that now? If not why would you be when you're a middle aged old man? It will probably be a shitty experience for the online consoles too because eventually they won't have their services online anymore. So it's not even comparable to the offline consoles of the past.

Lets be real. Unless you haven't moved on from a 3DS or Wii U those games you're buying this year probably won't be the copies you'll play long in the future. Your best chance are probably digital copies on PC. Especially GOG.

You can sell them when you are finished though. Get some money back.

What, 5$? Please, if you're going to return them, you'd save a ton of money with a rental service.

That's not really 'owning' them either.

If someone is willing to trade in games when they're done they're probably willing to subscribe to a service that gives them lots of games to play. That's a lot cheaper.

I have never done this. Selling games is a huge hassle or you'll get ripped off, or both.

I've actually been happy that I cant resell digital games because I've gone back to a lot of shit I normally would have traded in.

Also idk if you mentioned it but nobody owns their games, thry have a license to play said game. Physical copies are literally just DRM now.

Even if we consider a hypothetical scenario where servers are completely wiped out and all these games are officially lost I really doubt digging out original hardware and playing 1.0 versions of those games would be the best way to play them.

Unless something significantly dire happens this would be a long time away for any major company. I can even think of a scenario where the games would be that worthless. But by the time that happens as if the most updated versions of those games wouldn't be dumped on a server somewhere to emulate. We just saw this recently with DOS games.

Of course if the internet completely shut down you'd be really screwed but I don't know if current gen games would be the best games to play in that scenario tbh

This is a literal myth parroted by corporate propagandists. You do indeed own your games digital or physical corporate

Piracy has made physical media (for games) largely unnecessary for archival purposes. Unless its a console game, I dont mind buying digital, because if anything happens, there will always be a way.

Consoles I buy physical as much as possible because it would be a bigger pain to replace lost console games than PC. You gotta get a mod chip or pull some esoteric exploit that your firmware might not even support, and do all this extra work. Though Im not opposed to digital if theres a legitimately good sale going on.
