I think Sonic is a better design in both 2D and 3D.

Mario, as we all know has a very utilitarian look that was due to hardware limitations.

I think Sonic is definitely more unique and memorable in 2D, but his 3D look suffers because his quills just don't look right unless they have that Mickey Mouse's ears/Goku's hair thing goin' for them.
