I'm delighted that it's basically exactly the same game 3 was. Although I miss

1) each character having their own story mode
2) bodyguards

Dynasty Warriors is the type of game that's fun to play one entry every ~5 or so years, completely obliterate its achievement/trophy list, enjoy every second of it...and then not play again for 5 years.

It blows my mind that they put out new ones as often as they do. It takes me so long to recharge my interest in it.

Yep, exactly right. That timeframe is enough to recharge the nostalgia cells. I feel like I'm 16 again, playing this on PS2 for the first time.

The sheer amount to unlock is daunting though.

Also can I say, I know it's a silly game and all, but it somehow really highlights how stupid war is.

All these guys say they want the same thing (peace, calm, tranquility, land of benevolence, etc), but really all they fucking do is go out to battle, get a bunch of random peasants killed and then get all teary eyed because their father died of illness or one officer who killed hundreds finally succumbed to his wounds or whatever. They treat all of China as entirely disposable so that they can amuse themselves with war games and achieve absolutely nothing by the end of it.

8 is the best since 5 IMHO. I just wish KOEI's newer games didn't up the grind to such ridiculous levels.

The last one I played was One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3. That one was super fun, and I don't even care much for One Piece in general.

It's confusing. They milk the shit out of it as much as they can.

As far as I can make out there is

DW8 - base game
DW8 Extreme legends - (same but with more stuff)
DW8 Empires - (spin off that is more tactically focused, you create a character, it's less story based)
