I had a good writeup going then the computer fucked up and killed it all :(

Thought about considering Half-Life 2's release its own era, but while it had some huge influence, Half-Life 2 was more revolutionary for gaming in general than the FPS genre specifically. Also don't like calling the modern era the multiplayer era because there are some amazing singleplayer examples, but it can't be denied that the games that really sell and break records at this point in the genre are overwhelmingly multiplayer.

As I was going through the Wikipedia list of FPS games, it kinda made me want to write and briefly review all the games in there >.>;

DOOM through to the first half of CODs reign is pretty consistently excellent, albeit for WILDLY different reasons as time progresses

Half-Life 1 is up there, IDK about Return, I had some notable issues with it, though I did love it.

That's.....a pretty huge span with some truly, truly awful games in the mix, so IDK about that lol

Quake and Halo eras, although pretty much every era from the Halo era and on has been good.

You cheated but you included Blood so I'm inclined to forgive you. I can't emphasize enough how if you liked Blood I'd suggest Dusk. It's more like Quake, but its love for horror is the same exact variety.

Taking only the flagship games and their immediate kin you know what i meant

Tho I would argue that the wide array of crap-ass jank on each iteration of the Quake engine has its own merit of greatness for how hopelessly broken and hilariously incompetent a lot of it was.

Edit: Did you just make up the era years or is this from something? I'd probably extend the CoD era out to 2016 or so and then the current era would be the battle royale era.

You're right I should've made a battle royal era, I explain it by never really getting into those. The eras are based on the release dates of specific games, but I'll admit the last era is pretty arbitrary. I based it on CS:GO and Borderlands 2 coming out back to back, as the two really solidified the focus on playing multiplayer, either versus or coop, rather than playing alone, and CS:GO really helped push the FPS side of esports.

Ive tried with Dusk a lot but it just doesnt land for me. I cant even quite place why or what about it doesnt work, but man Ive tried.

Amid Evil is my fucking JAM tho as far as new retro FPS games go, and Ion Fury, for all its uh, issues, is arguably the best thing on the Build engine, edged out only by the pure joy of chucking a bundle of TNT into a group of screaming cultists.

True, although I was thinking of Daikatana in particular. John Romero sure did make me his bitch.

Fair enough. Amid Evil is also amazing, and I adore it! Look into more roguelike FPS games too. Tower of Guns and Mothergunship, Ziggurat, Immortal Redneck, and Devil Daggers are all fun in their own ways and bring me back to the old school run and dodge and gun gameplay.

That's a good point. I guess a separate era from 2012 to 2016 or 17 then. L4D came out around 2012 too right? Or was that L4D2? I remember those being pretty popular multiplayer games as well.

You know, I thought so and had to look it up, but no. 2008 and 2009. Full 10 years old now.
