I havent heard anything that makes me sure theres physical violence, so I havent called the cops yet. But I do hear what sounds like bad arguing with a male yelling stuff like Hit me, bitch! But I never hear anything that sounds like hitting or screaming after that.

Say I do hear something that sounds like that. Would I be legally out of my rights to try to interfere with that situation? Because I feel like if I just called 911 and waited around for the cops to show up, if something bad were to happen it would be too late by the time they showed up.

Honestly I think you should just mind your business and call the cops. Unless youre trying to do the girl or something.

Lol at people treating this question like Im white knighting.

Its a legit question because in todays lawsuit culture, id be surprised if I werent held legally liable in some way if something did happen and I didnt try to interfere.

It's not legal at all. If anything, there are laws that actually hurt the people who try to help. Like if you try to help someone in a car wreck and end up making it worse or something.

If you don't want to call 911, there are non-emergency response lines for stuff like this.

Lets say youre taking a stroll through your neighborhood and you hear someone screaming Help! Help! Doesnt it make sense to try to enter and see how you can help right then instead of calling the cops and waiting 10 minutes on them to show up? In 10 minutes, the person yelling Help! Help! could take a severe wallop and die. In 30 seconds, you might be able to help.

I would definitely say that this is a scenario where unless you had really good evidence that someone's life is in eminent danger, you should leave it to the authorities. Which is the safest route for you both physically and legally. Even if you think someone is about to be harmed, you are still putting your self in legal and physical danger just by entering, but I know some people would take that risk if it meant helping people.

Maybe like knock and ask if they need help at least? And if the victim cant respond or says yes, then try to do something

Screaming help is a clear sign they want help and you have permission to. It's a different situation.

You could always knock on their door and say theyre disturbing you when they come answer it. If theyre not answering you can call the cops.

Yeah, go knock on the door of two clearly agitated possibly physically violent people and say they're disturbing you.

Or ya know... do what any sensible person would do if they suspect abuse and notify the police.

I went and banged on the door when this was happening at my downstairs neighbors once, though I have to admit it was mainly for selfish reasons (3am and I needed to freaking sleep). They did quiet down, thankfully.

I'm in a similar situation, and I've gotten close to calling the cops. I've even heard the chick saying something about calling cops. It's tricky. I don't know them but I don't want no crazy husband on my case directly next to me

With the current situation thats just yelling there is no abuse and the cops could slam on you for wasting their time.

What the fuck are you even going on about? My entire point, to put it even less subtly so you can understand it:

No it won't. If there is evidence he was hitting the woman, he'll be arrested. If the cops show up and hear yelling, he'll still get arrested and at the very least charged with disorderly conduct.

Not true, something similar happened in my neighborhood a few months ago, now the perpetrator isn't allowed to come back.

Don't try to be a hero. Some people just live in constant chaos and if you try and interfere the woman you think is being abused might even jump you. I've seen it before and that's why I mind my own business.

Speaking on that my brother in law is a saint, my sister is one of those types who likes the constant drama and he's put up with so much over the years. God bless him.

No and you should stay the fuck out of it unless it involves a family member, close friend or loved one. Call the cops and let them handle it if you're that concerned otherwise.
