Here's something I don't know about rent control:

If there was rent control, supply would go way down because it wouldn't be worth it for landowners to rent out property. But unless the property has some other use, wouldn't it just sit there as a loss for the landlord? This would eventually lead to a big supply (and therefore lowered prices) on the housing market.

Although this would probably destroy the economy.

Landlords who can build housing that doesn't fall under rent regulation (like luxury apartments) will do so, further reducing the supply of middle and lower-income housing.

All of these affect supply, but not the demand. People still need a roof over their heads and will take what they can get. So your only options are to be rich enough to afford luxury housing, "lucky" enough to find a rent-controlled slum, pay a hugely inflated price for market housing because the supply is so low, or just be homeless.

Rent control is universally condemned by both left and right-wing economists. It is textbook populist economic illiteracy. There is a reason the bernie bots ITT had to resort to Trump-style shitposting, they can't actually defend it.
