So Destiny 2 was a Playstation Plus game some months back, but now it went free to play. I have some friends playing the F2P version on Xbox that want me to jump in with them, and I've been wanting to get back on the Destiny train for a while now anyway. So it seems like the best time, at least after Outer Worlds is done consuming me.

Now I'm basically wondering, is there any difference between the full version I downloaded from PS Plus and the new F2P version of the game? I'd like to play with my Xbox friends, but also don't want to play a gimped version of the game. Can I experience the entire base game campaign in the new F2P offering? Cross-saves are a thing now too though right, so I could theoretically just switch back and forth between the two? Is it that simple?

Mostly.

With the free version you get the full Year 1 content, so vanilla/Curse of Osiris/Warmind, plus access to the full Crucible and the patrol zones from Forsaken and Shadowkeep. You don't get access to the story or raid content from the latter two (or certain exotic quests) without purchasing them, and if you do so you can only access that on the system you purchase it.

The exception to this is access to the current seasonal content (currently included with Shadowkeep), which carries over (so for example I only own Shadowkeep on PS4, but can play Vex Offensive on Xbox or PC if I want).

So from the sound of it, there is zero percent difference in the free version and the Destiny 2 that was on PS Plus some time back? Bungie basically knew they were going F2P soon so put it on PS Plus a few months beforehand.

The difference between the F2P version and the PS+ version is that there's more stuff in the F2P version. Activision put D2 on Plus to encourage sales of the Forsaken expansion at release. Months later, Bungie bought themselves out from contract and became the publisher of the game, and decided to shift to a free to start + la carte model for new & future expansions.

You'll definitely be limited if you don't buy the expansions. There's so many gun quests, raids and activities tied up in Year 2 and Year 3 expansions. But yes, you can play through the base campaign and the two short DLCs without paying anything, and then decide if you want to jump in and get access to everything.
