This. Study after study has shown the divide in whether or not college athletes should be compensated has fallen largely on racial lines. White america, when asked, largely doesnt believe an arena (D1 college sports) dominated by black athletes, should be paid, despite the literal billions in revenue they generate.
More specifically, studies show that anti-black sentiment is the single greatest factor commonly held by proponents against paying players.

"but they're getting scholarships!" is such a dumb argument...this isn't about the NCAA paying them. Its just saying that if outside of the game someone wants to pay for an autograph or advertisement they can take that money....the fact they already couldn't do that is absurd.

The thing is...any athlete can sign endorsements and stuff like that for money. They just can't be playing NCAA sports while doing so.

NCAA is not the only option for athletes.

What a stupid take.

All the college/university-related associations have the same rule. Literally the only other option is to leave the country.

Why continue to prop up a system who enrich off the backs of unpaid labor? I'm happy people arent following your lead and are instead, forcing the NCAA to revise such an outdated policy

Student athletes are far more restricted than non-athletes when it comes to what they can or can't do while in school? How is that fair? Academic scholarship students can make money doing whatever they want, but some walk-on benchwarmer that will never be pro in their sport can't even accept a free lunch.

But oh no future pro superstar might make a little money before he goes pro and makes more money, so fuck everyone I guess.

I don't necessarily oppose the policy. I just like to point out the fact that nobody is trapped into one particular system.

Your semantics are noted and as history is showing us in real time, irrelevant

My point is that there are other sports leagues besides the NCAA and that are not collegiate at all that will welcome athletes right out of high school.

Like what? "Leaving the country" isn't a realistic option for 99% of these players.

The XFL won't last 2 years and with this guideline change by the NCAA no one has any reason to pick it over college anyways, especially given most of these scholarships are worth more than the minimum XFL salary.

Where I live there are all kinds of pro sports leagues for multiple sports. You try out, get signed up, and then play for a city team that plays teams in other cities around the state and in surrounding states. They get paid and the athletes can sign endorsement deals all they want...and they do.

"They can play in semi-professional leagues" (as if there aren't age requirements) isn't a valid solution.

It also assumes every student athlete is planning to make it a professional career. And isn't just someone playing the sport they love in school while being under increased restrictions that non-athletes, scholarship or not, do not have to deal with.

99% of student athletes won't go pro, but 100% are expected to make their schools money for nothing in return. Pretty much every financial transaction is scrutinized in a way it isn't for non-athletes. A non-athlete scholarship student could film their daily life at school and become an Internet superstar and make tons of money. If a volleyball player did that, they would lose their eligibility and scholarship (if they had one) and possibly get kicked out of school.
