Get this: there are also people who think "real" art refers to visual art created before they were born

There's always been a section of society that resists technology when it comes to art.

Like the "pressing play on an ipod isn't music" crowd.

Yes indeedy. I recently showed some of my portfolio to a coworker: the gorgeous digital painting barely got a courteous nod, while the half-decent physical media lineart I drew over a decade ago got a 'wow, you really drew that?!'

Yes, its real art. Just like a mass produced belt is still a belt.

Belts made by hand will generally be desired more tho

I don't know if that's a good analogy to be honest. We're not comparing the original mona lisa to prints of the mona lisa.

This is really about what particular craft and tools you use to make visual art.

Some people think non-traditional instruments aren't real instruments.

And on top of that, people think music made today "isn't real music" LMFAO. Imagine if our cave-like ancestors heard music made in the 20th and 21st century and was like "This isn't real music! Where is the limestone banging together for percussion!" That's how oldheads sound talking about today's music.

I guess that was a crude way of saying that hand done art will always be looked at a higher regard than digital art.

I like both and think both require a certain skill

I take your point. Although somewhat ironically to that, digital art skills are more valuable from a job market perspective than hand done art skills.

I think ultimately it comes down to the actual art that is being produced.

The idea of a quality barrier determining what is and isn't art is dumb and implies all art is good by its very nature.

Video games are definitely art. It's self-expression. Now not all games are good art, but art nonetheless.

I pretty much completely agree with you there.

I always refer to Julie Giroux's To Walk With Wings, a beautiful classical piece from earlier this century written for symphonic band and synthesizer.

I guess it depends on how you define art. I would suspect any reasonable definition would include at least a few video games.

Digital art is certainly art, it's very impressive what people can do. I will say though that I personally like traditional art more.
