Just rewatched the Martian and would like some more. Probably gonna watch Europa Report next, since I don't think I've seen it.

Dammit, I'm pretty sure I've seen Europa Report, so that's out. Moon, doesn't really interest me and I've seen I am Mother, but thanks for the suggestions. I've also seen Interstellar, Arrival, and the Space Between Us. Gravity doesn't really interest me either.

Hmm, Moon actually seems more interesting than I thought, will keep it in mind.

definitely Moon
Snowpiercer

Ex Machina supposed to be really good but haven't seen it
Edge of Tomorrow
Prometheus I found enjoyable just treating it as generic sci-fi
The World's End
Serenity
District 9
Wall-E
Children of Men

Moon is fantastic, highly recommend. Life is ok, nothing amazing.

Prospect
Sunshine
High Life

I enjoyed Passengers a lot, but it's more of a romcom than a sci-fi movie.

Seems like you're just looking for "space" movies. If you're looking for sci-fi not set in space there are a fuck ton of others I could recommend.

I realize that you asked for movies. But I'm going to suggest the series Electric Dreams on Amazon. I just started watching it a few days ago and have been really enjoying the episodes. It's sort of like Outer Limits.

Tons of fun. I think its a perfect recommendation for most people because its really just a sci-fi action movie, no pretentiousness at all just a sick movie.

The live-action? Eh it has its strengths but overall I think it is pretty awful and not really worth your time. Just go watch the anime movies.

Seen:

The Martian
Europa Report
Moon, was pretty good, with a tinge of familiarity, not sure if I'd seen it previously or not
I am Mother
Interstellar
Arrival
The Space Between Us
Snowpiercer
Dredd
Ex Machina
Edge of Tomorrow
Prometheus
Serenity
District 9, wish it got a sequel, Chappie as well
Wall-E
Children of Men
Passengers
Upgrade
Star Trek (2009), made Trek into space action unfortunately
Alita, ok, just like mead said

Haven't seen/unsure if seen:

Life
Infinity Chamber
Orbiter 9
The World's End
Prospect
Sunshine
High Life
Blade Runner 2049, not a huge fan of the original, but might give this a try
Under the Skin
Ad Astra
Annihilation, think I started this one before, but didn't finish it
Midnight Special
Coherence
Living with Yourself and Electric Dreams are series and not what I'm looking for, but I'll keep them in mind
Ghost in the Shell (live action) seen two animated Ghost in the Shell movies as well as the first and second seasons of stand alone complex, no real interest in this one

Think that's everything in the topic so far. Have plenty of things to check out now, thanks. Yeah, Doc you're right, I was more looking for space themed sci fi, but other sci fi can be good as well. I'm really not sure if I'd seen Moon before or not, but it did seem somewhat familiar, though maybe I just remembered it a bit from old promos that likely ran for the film.

Like you, I was also not a huge fan of Blade runner. But I gave 2049 a try anyways. I think it builds well off of the first movie, and out-performs it in every way. I'm not usually a fan of Ryan Gosling. But I think they managed to take his acting style and give him a role he was perfect for. Kind of like Scwarzenegger before him, with Terminator.

Watched:

Life, it was "eh", feel like most of what happened could be attributed to user error
The World's End, again, didn't really care for it, seemed like a paint by numbers movie from those guys
Annihilation, liked this one the most of the three, but I didn't love it, had some great imagery though

Not sure if you're aware, but The Expanse was picked up for more seasons by Amazon. The fourth season is supposed to air in December.

Watched Infinity Chamber, I didn't really dig it either. Seems like a lot of these sci fi movies are made just to show a concept, but the entertainment part of the movie often gets left behind somewhat.

what exactly are you looking for? reading the first post again, you said you watched the Martian multiple times; I wouldn't exactly call that amazing entertainment.

Event Horizon isnt recent but its cult-popular so it can be overlooked depending on your age or upbringing. Its one of my favourite movies so I rarely watch it so it can stay somewhat fresh.

Something that clicks with me, which is why I asked for something so general as sci fi, since it's not something I can really describe. It's one of those "I'll know it when I see it" deals. I'm just critiquing how I feel about sci fi movies in general, not the recommendations. I'm glad people recommended as many movies as they did. Hopefully I'll find one or two I really like.

I would add a couple to the list that you already have:

Oblivion (not as good as Edge of Tomorrow but scifi for sure)
Vanilla Sky
Minority Report
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (while I realize that it's japanese anime and later than you requested [released in 1988] it's good scifi as well)
Godzilla (not the most recent but the movie before that)
