UnfairRepresent 10/27/19 7:22:21 PM #1:	Its almost Halloween, and that means some atheist student groups on college campuses are erecting a Graveyard of the Gods, reminding students of all the deities who were once worshiped, only to be forgotten. The purpose is to get students thinking about when their God will join the ranks of the dead. The Secular Student Alliance at the University of Texas at San Antonio shared some pictures of what they put up on their campus:Its a wonderful way to get people to think critically about their own beliefs. The group told me the display will be up through the end of the week on the Sombrilla Lawn. And as they wrote on their post, the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Anyone interested in creating their own graveyard can find resources at the Secular Student Alliances website. Interesting comment here by E.A. Blair: In a mythology class, a fundie student (we called em Jesus freaks back then) asked me why I referred to the deities in the myths in the present tense (for example, I said things like Zeus is the king of the Olympian gods instead of saying was). My reply was that all deities are neither more nor less real and existing now than they were in ancient times. It took him a while, though, to figure out that I had just dismissed his deity as an ancient myth. A number of others in the class, though, including the teacher, caught it right away and had a nice smile at the freaks expense. The Secular Student Alliance website, however, opens with the statement Graveyard of the Gods is a farewell to humanitys forgotten deities. Well, if all these deities are forgotten, then how do they know which names to put on the tombstones? They may be neglected, but they're part of human literature and history, and, therefore, hardly forgotten. Poor choice of words, that. So I guess this swings the door open to all religious believers, your religion probably won't die any time soon due to the internet and global communication and the like. But for the sake of argument, let's say for a fact that you knew within 700 years time your religion would no longer be practiced and your beliefs/holy texts would only be recorded alongside myths/history classes like the religions and cultures of old. Belief in Santa isn't creating/influencing political policy and global/economic/war stances. I think the trinity is sort of contrived but they basically believe in three Gods, YHWH, Jesus and also the Holy Spirit (or maybe the Holy Spirit is generally considered lesser than the other two?
