You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?

This song is so great. The way Em tells a story through each verse, the way he makes it rhyme in a way that you don't even realize it's rhyming because you're wrapped up in the song/story, and just the overall tune of the song is great.

I remember hearing this song for the first time and several times after, and hearing the Dido song that its sampled from afterward and thinking that it did not fit in that song at all. I think the Dido song was recorded before Stan was recorded, but it got big on the radio after I had already heard Stan, so I had always thought it was jarring to hear that verse in the Dido song.

Also remember the guy from Final Destination played Stan in the music video?

rap isn't music, therefore it cannot be a song

Dude I didn't even know that was a song outside of Stan until like two weeks ago.

It was also really interesting to hear this song at the time of its release, because it painted a different picture of Eminem/Slim/Marshall than his other hits/songs. This was his second album and most of his other hits/songs boasted drug use, violence, hatred of the females in his life, etc. And in this one, when he writes back to his fan, he seems like a guy that cares about his fans, admits that what he writes about in his songs is an exaggeration at times, and that the fan he is writing to should get help for the demons that he is facing.

It was a really interesting introduction to that side of Eminem.

I still appreciate it, but it doesn't lend itself to repeat listens because of the narrative imo.

Like yeah, the first time it floors you and the next several too as you absorb more of it, but once you're familiar with it it's too familiar. It's like watching a favorite TV episode too many times, if that makes sense

I can still appreciate it. Not in a "I am leveled by its meaning every time" kind of way, because just like anything, the impact of something depreciates on repeat experiences of it. But I can still jam to the tune, sing along to the lyrics, and appreciate the story as I'm listening to it and kind of visualize it in my head as a story each time. Rather than just listening to it and the words are just skimming past my brain and then the song is over.

Eminem did a lot of stories in his songs back then. That's part of what made him so good.
