As somebody who played the first one until around the time that our main woman was revealed to be an ancient goddess or whatever and things got really cheesy to the point where I just didn't bother picking it up again the next time i had time for games...

How's this one compare?

The highlight of this series is the unique gameplay, so if that was a low point of emphasis for you, the series is probably not for you.

Pretty much every VC was bad, from 1-3, with 2 being the closest to good.

but the gameplay system itself is beautiful and promising and unique

one of the more disappointing sequels in recent memory but it's a billion times better than whatever "azure revolution" was supposed to be so I'm thankful for it anyway

the core gameplay is almost as good as the original but they don't really do anything unique here and the story is much worse. vc2 for the psp was much better tbh

I've gotten mixed answers asking individual people this question so I'll ask it here - did they fix the class balance at all in this one? I love VC1 but once you realize how completely busted Scouts are it's hard to resist the temptation of just breaking the game. (IIRC mission ranks were almost balanced around those strats, too!)

I have no answer other than "just don't scout rush and it's fine anyway, enjoy your A and B ranks"

grenadiers are hilariously good

but imo the fun of these games is breaking them

and i don't remember exactly but overall this game made pure scout rushing less OP

This was why I didn't like VC1. It was less a strategy game and more a puzzle game of figuring out what BS strategy you need to use to beat each particular level.

it's all good, but nothing you absolutely need.
the beach dlc actually has some good new maps. there's ex missions too. there's also a neat vc1 dlc that gives you the characters after

nothing vital but all worthwhile. just note that the dlc is paced in the regular course of the game so if you buy it later after getting pretty far into the game it will be stupid easy
