Main series is, say 5 entries long. In part 2 or so, the party goes to the Gold Saucer. Now, everything from the original is there, plus more, just like how every other location is supposed to be. But there's a place that's roped off saying "under construction" or whatever.

Then they release a standalone game featuring hundreds of fun minigames and set in the Gold Saucer. It doesn't really fit into the continuity, just like you can pop into the Gold Saucer in OG FF7 at more or less any point to play some minigames, but it's a blast for multiplayer, including all the story-relevant minigames from the FF7R series and a highly sophisticated "Chocobo Garden" a la Sonic Adventure with highly sophisticated Chocobo Racing mechanics and like twenty different tracks. And of course, you can transfer your chocobos into and out of the game from other FF7R entries via a simple interface.
