I didn't see a topic for this, so here it is! This game comes out TODAY 7PM EST (on PC). I know I'm super excited to try it out, especially since it is free on Game Pass. It's been getting great reviews too!

Thoughts so far?

I signed up for PC game pass because why not it's 1 dollar for this first month. Game looks great and the reviews are glowing. For a dollar, hell yeah

So I was going to play on PC, but the game kept crashing for me during character creation. I don't know if this is an actual issue or just a problem with my PC. So I downloaded it on XBox and played some there. So far so good, but I'm way too early to really say anything yet.

Dont think Ive read anything about crashing during character creation anywhere else. At least not frequent enough for it to be a known issue.

Ill probably jump on the $1 game pass deal and give this a shot tonight.

Finished the first world, playing in Supernova mode. I'm really liking it, even though the companion AI is stupidly suicidal, so keeping them alive is my biggest challenge so far. It's also weird to me that the character creator is so in-depth, but you never see your character outside of the menu. Also, annoyed that when I see someone wearing a cool hat, I can't just kill them and take it.

I mean, I can kill them, I just can't always take it.

Totally worth lowering your intelligence slightly for dumb responses too.

so iv been playing this game a bit

i feel like it's just fallout. i kinda knew that before buying it but man it does really nothing to differentiate itself at all and it kinda bugs me. sure its "a good game" but it feels really weird to me that they made fallout new vegas and then went on to make fallout again and everyone is congratulating them for it.

well Bethesda isnt doing a very good job of making Fallout lately so people are hungry for a Falloutesque experience

I feel like this game definitely has a different feel than Fallout though... its like the merging of Fallout and Bioshock with a Firefly coat. Still nothing really unique, but a fun remix of old parts.

its too easy to steal and trespass in this game... I just picked a lock, got caught, intimidated the guy, then he was like uh ok and I got 1% bad rep and moved on to totally steal everything from the room. Theres no actual risk.

I think it's been best described as the world Fallout would have likely become, had the bombs not dropped.

And I'm glad I'm playing in Supernova my first time through. Some of the stuff, like only being able to sleep and save at your ship is annoying, but companions perma-dying is keeping the fights intense, because they have so few survival instincts. Some of those early fights, before I got some half-decent guns, were rough. But yeah, I already have thousands of bullets for each gun type and stealing stuff is way too easy.

There's a couple of ship decorations that I've wanted to snag, but are in plain sight of a room full of people, though if a tiny loss of rep is all it costs, I might just have to swipe them.

in my experience if you get seen someone runs up to you like they were an Oblivion guard and goes hey dude what the fuck and then youre given the option of either:
-bribing them
-passing one of three dialogue type checks at like level 25
-some bad options I dont have to choose because the dialogue check is so easy

and then I get 1% negative rep and we move on. So yeah, grabbing stuff should be fine.

so i really like this game, but not as much as I thought I would. it feels like New Vegas with a lot of the QoL improvements of 4 without any of the dumb bullshit that came with it, but set on a No Man's Sky world

so of course that's good and all but I guess my biggest problem is that nothing has really knocked my socks off yet. my fave thing from Fallout/Elder Scrolls is companions. I love companions, it's why i play the game.

The companions in Outer Worlds have not impressed me yet. They kinda get thrown at you too, you just walk into a place and they're like "hey do you want two companions" and the quests to "recruit" them are like next-level easy. not a fan of that.

maybe i wouldnt mind that as much if the companions seemed interesting but so far they dont stand out. i'm trying to do their quests and see whats up with them but i'm so lukewarm going in that I don't know how much my opinion will change.

core gameplay loop is really good tho

SAM has suddenly disappeared from my crew. Uhhh, preeetty goddamn positive I didn't kick him out accidentally or some shit. Like...where did he go? Hopefully this involves some quest or something and isn't a glitch. Dude was a powerhouse and I'm about to go to Monarch for the first time (without the Stellar Bay key - saving the bits and doing it the hard way, aw yeah).

E: Huh. I reloaded my save and he's back. Must have been a weird glitch or something. Just super glad it wasn't anything permanent.

I'm torn on SAM. He's hilarious and probably my favorite companion, but I want as much dialogue as possible and I'm afraid SAM won't add much to NPC dialogue.

Worst part of the game so far is the massive amounts of utter trash equipment they throw your way. It's like Mass Effect 1 all over again.

I haven't had much issues with weight. I've only been over the limit twice, and I'll just drop whatever I picked up, fast travel somewhere and sell all the junk. I have almost too much money right now and fast travel points are everywhere of relevance that it never takes me more than a minute or two to get back to where I was

And now I'm swimming in money

So, I like this game, but I want to like it more than I do. I hate to sound petty but there are a lot of design choices that synergize negatively together to create a bunch of tiny issues that add up. They're present in a lot of older games of this type but that's not an excuse - they should have solved these by now.

-As I mentioned before, you get a ton of equipment and 95% of it is worthless. There's not a quick and dirty way to got through all of it either, because the 5% of cool weapon you get is placed right in the middle of the rest of the crap and it would be easy to accidentally sell/scrap it if turn off your brain when sell/scrapping all the others. This is unavoidable, because...

-Aside from ensuring you don't do away with those few special items, you can't just ignore the equipment (and for that matter, consumables) that you will never use, because selling them is a steady source of income. Your steadiest, actually. And repairing weapons/armor takes a surprising amount of parts, so you'll need to pay attention to scrapping enough of them to keep your favored items in good condition. And since it's a good idea to pick up everything you can...

-You have to keep an eye on your inventory weight limit, which is simply not fun to do. Makes going on a scrapping/selling spree even more of a chore than it already is, because instead of doing it at your leisure you're forced to do it at irregular times. It's also very easy to reach that inventory limit, unless...

-You invest a perk in inventory max+. Perks like this simply should not exist. You know what's a fun perk? Extra headshot damage, or being able to heal your allies, or any other sort of fun combat synergy. Stuff like inventory max+, and the increased movement speed, and the ability to see highlighted objects from farther away? That should all be baked into the base game naturally. Instead of being able to use your perks on interesting stuff, you're forced to use them on a bunch of 'make the game actually fun' options. I mean, you're not FORCED, but it would feel awful not to have them.

-I don't have a lead-in to this one, but put simply, the weapon mods system sucks. Mods you can't remove makes using them feel awful. It incentives you not to either not upgrade your weapons/armor when something better comes along, because you might not have an extra version of your favorite mod, or just...hoard the mods forever. Not fun.

There's a couple other things, but I've ranted for long enough. All together it makes the core gameplay loop much less fun than it should be. The writing is good, the world is good, the combat is good...but I find myself not enjoying going around and shooting/exploring/looting nearly as much as I want to. I had a LOT more fun doing it in Fallout 4 (mostly because I modded the game not to have any of these problems).

Man, I agree with every point Kamikaze made to an insane degree. I'll add to that one thing: this game doesn't explain personality attributes well at all and I now find myself in a pickle.

I've got like every faction I've enountered revering me...but then I walked into the C&P Boarst Factory on Monarch and killed a whole bunch of workers there to get to Clive. And suddenly both my charm and temparament went down to "below average."

Basically, I can't even regenerate health anymore since my temperament is in the red (without wearing my defective moonman helmet that raises it back up to average anyway). And the game never bothers to explain the importance of these attributes. And I'm not even sure there IS a way to raise these back up permanently. The respec machine on the ship doesn't even work. Having googled this endlessly to no avail, I posted on the Outer Worlds board asking how to raise your temperament and charm, and all I'm getting is to try different gear or consumables. Surely they wouldn't have made it so your personality traits can only ever go permanently down and not up? Surely I'm just not fully grasping how this system works?

Either way, they do a horrible job of explaining just how important those traits are. I accepted the "paranoid" flaw for a perk point way early in the game too, not fully grasping the impact of my choice. I'd hate to have to always wear this dumb moonman helmet just to regenerate health from now on.

Just slammed this out in 3 days. It was....fine. I feel like it would have been better if they had thrown away some of the things they felt they had to include. It didn't need all the crap sitting everywhere. It didn't need that many pointless weapons. It feels like some halfway point between Mass Effect 2 and Fallout, without reaching the highs of either (I don't like Fallout, but I recognize what it does). I guess...kind of like a worse ME1? Would have liked it a lot more if they just went full ME2.

Also way too many quests requiring you to load into to different maps repeatedly considering the load times.

Oh, also, need to vent about the very end.

Spend that whole fucking game a smooth talker. Passing every single speech requirement. The actual, most important final speech check in the entire game? 100 Science. A skill that has almost never mattered even once and is for some reason now the deciding factor to the final speech check option. Fuck off.

Load times pretty small on PC.

And yeah, I'd say the game was consistently good from start to finish, and I enjoyed all of it... but there wasn't really anything super amazing about it. Just a good, enjoyable game. Which is fine. No major complaints.
