Starts out as a stormtrooper, could have done so many interesting things like show his ptsd, his relationship with the other soldiers (his former friends) and attempts at adjusting to a non military life.

the problem is that IIRC, they go out of their way to point out that that was his very first fight, and thereby completely eliminate any talk of "he did bad things, but now he's good"

There is like almost no chance that they would have ever done any of that in the movies.
That being said, they didn't have to walk back all of his character development from TFA into TLJ and give him such a shitty role. Rey was separated from her parents and its a major part of her character
Finn was separated from his parents and its such a non-issue for him. Hes not even conflicted about the soldiers he grew up & trained with being killed off.
