the problem is the network providers basically extorting the cable companies to pay absurd amounts for cable packages, the cable companies then have no choice but to pass that cost onto the customers

The best content on TV is live sports, and while you could get streaming for each league you're interested in, the final cost is going to end up being about the same as cable. You also can only watch local teams on cable.

As long as cable controls the live sports market, they aren't going away.
