I was flipping through the PHB last night (as you do) and read Mage Slayer again and was drawn to it for some reason. I'm really digging the idea of a guy that runs up to a wizard and just nopes out all of his attacks. The only problem is, I'm having trouble thinking of a backstory for why someone would be so well equipped and desiring to kill magic users that wouldn't also cause him to be against the casters that will invariably be in the party.

Best idea I can come up with is a Hexblade Warlock (for Counterspell and Dispel and still having melee ability) and saying either his Patron bound him to the sword and commands he kill magic users but "he never said in what order" or maybe the blade itself hungers for mana but he can keep it contained around the party.

And then there's the old standby Former Captain of the Mage Hunters but he realized the error of his ways and now some of his best friends are wizards.

Anyway, that's what my brain's doing today.

I think I'm going Tiefling Hexblade. Dark Vision, Hellish Rebuke, Grasp of Hadar, Counterspell, and Dispel just to start a list.
