is it on call like you get to sleep there or like you're literally nursing 16 hours?

Makin that money. This chick I used to work with is now a nurse for about a year now. She drinks a lot more since she started doing that. I guess it's because she works in the ICU.

My sister is an ICU nurse and her drinking has gotten much heavier. She ubers a lot, but I worry about her making a bad decision and losing her ability to be a nurse. She is so over worked.

Yeahhhh man I'm not worried about her. I'm worried about if I ever happen to roll in there on a gurney.

It was a 16 hour shift. Day shift was dangerously short (hell I had an unsafe assignment all night) so I stayed for 4 hours until another nurse came in so it wasnt as unsafe.

Working long hours makes me glad I dont like to drink liquor. I barely have enough time on weeknights to drink beer even if I wanted to.

I wouldn't wish 16 hour days on anyone. Did a string of them back when I was younger, 12 in a row actually. Was working security. The money was amazing, but it tests your mental stability. And yes, my boss did get fired after that since its illegal to work someone that much.

Luckily this was around the time of Jumbo video/Blockbuster so I rented out a ton of movies/games to play while working there. I guarded a service tower a few miles from the city during the winter, behind a closed gate. The only thing I had to have was my car running the entire night to power my laptop, but I made a decent chunk of change from it so gas was change in comparison.

Great gig, hate that I lost it shortly after, due to me falling asleep on the job and being caught by the owner of the building showing up. But luckily I managed to keep my overall job due to me being the only one that actually showed up to work. Turns out every other security worker just locked the building up and went home to collect a paycheck for doing nothing. And before someone comments, I did do my rounds. It's just that since everything was locked up, those rounds only took about 5 minutes every hour. Wish I could go back and work that again, but the company got a lot of bad press and has since been absorbed by a much stricter company.

When I worked for Pepsi as a delivery driver I worked 10+ hours every weekday and if one of the drivers called out, it turned into a 15 hour day. Made a lot of money. Caused a lot of mental turmoil in my head.

I always wondered if they validated whether the security guards did their job or not. Thanks for confirming.

Some do.
I know our office has an alarm that trips I think 30 minutes after the expected walk around unless it's expected.
Like if a security guard is doing a walk around on an office a few minutes way and is stuck investigating, he'll call the headquarters and they'll bypass the alarm.

Most of the time we have what's called a road patrol. 2 security higher ups that go to each location to see if your there. Most nights they don't show up. What sucked is that you weren't allowed to leave your location unless you called one of them. We'd leave to use the bathroom or buy food. Most nights, I'd just leave and come back within like 15 minutes. I was far enough away that even if they caught me they weren't that pissed.

Here's an interesting factoid: Here where I live in Canada, they didn't provide us with any form of protection. No cellphones, no flashlights, no pepper spray, no nothing. So if something ever happened, I'd just leave the scene and call my boss to take care of it. I don't get paid enough to protect a location without protection. Their excuse was that "it could be taken and used against us", which is nonsense. Not that it mattered much since I have a 1st dan belt in TKD, so I'm fine without it.

I've been averaging two 12 hour shifts per week lately and I feel like it is killing me.

This week I'll be working 40 hours in the span of 4 days. Just gonna be working, eating, and sleeping.

Same in Ireland for doctors. 24 hour shifts are common with only a few hours sleep at best,
Not sure on nurses, the standard is 12 hours on/off

I did this once before at my old job. By the end of the day the rash was so bad, my fart almost tore me a new one. Sat on one cheek the ride home. I laid in bed with vaseline all day the next day lol.
