"I think I'll have a milkshake today."

*Drives to closest fast food place*

>Immediately tries to sell me the most expensive gimmick on the menu as I don't know exactly what I want when I pull up

>Asks me if I want to upsize to the most expensive size when I ask for a small

>Asks if I want fries with that

>Asks if I want cookies for dessert

As someone who has worked in sales, it is fairly effective.

How do the statistics for that work anyway

Cause I feel like it would be disingenuous if they're just going by how many people decided to upsize, they might have planned to upsize before the obnoxious cashier asked

I never worked on me because i am bitter, pessimistic fucker. I just treat every pitch as evil entities wanting to squeeze me dry.

When I worked at a car wash, my boss would say studies have shown 1 in 4 customers go for the $30 special. I've seen nothing to back that up but it wouldn't surprise me. Some people don't want to think about purchasing decisions.

Pretty much. There is a subset of the population who either has a difficult time saying no, or has a poor conception their needs versus the value of the item, or are too trusting, or a half dozen other things. I've seen some people get badly swindled with over-priced add-ons because of this. It's the biggest reason I got out of sales. The whole system is built to prey on people.
