It's a game I've played since I was a baby but I've never actually beaten it. Same with Mario 3. I've used the whistle to get to the final world in that, but always get my ass kicked by those levels. Those games were hard back then. Super Mario World is much easier to beat.

I beat SMB1 it a few times, but rarely go back to it because it's just not very enjoyable. SMB3 has always been a blast to play though; I never use whistles or skip stages when playing anymore, that's just robbing myself of content. The only exception is that occasionally I won't have the patience for that one fort in World 8 with all the Scooby-Doo doors, and I'll Cloud my way past it.

I think I beat SMB1 like once.

The All-Stars version I've beat more times, though. Fewer than ten.

1 and 2 I beat fairly regularly. 3 had that weird bug where if you didn't hold down and b or something when you walked through the last door after beating Bowser the game would freeze, and I never bothered to figure out exactly what you had to do so I never saw the ending to three until YouTube.

i have a hard time believing that anyone with the manual dexterity to send a text message in less than 10 minutes couldn't manage to beat 1-1.

I've never beaten it on the NES, I usually choke at 8-2 or 8-3. I beat it on the GameBoy Color though, but I think it's easier on there.

The GBA version has some pretty killer challenge. Like the score attack or collecting the red coins.

it's not terribly difficult

Disagree hard.

Worlds 1-7 are not terribly difficult but World 8 is mandatory and will leave you in a world of hurt when combined with the arcade holdover lives system.

I think the hardest thing about these games in the game overs. And the physics I was never very comfortable with. I can beat any Mega Man game far easier than Mario 1-3.

it's been a while, but isn't there a hidden 1-up in 8-1, 2 and 3?

I only beat the first one as an adult. SMB games are harder than they look tbh. You have to be pretty skilled at games to beat them.

I'm not sure what to think of these claims that trivialize the difficulty of Mario 2, especially with no warps. I never knew a single person growing up who had beaten it. It was long, unintuitive, and hard.

Quite possibly. But if there is, I never found them.

The bigger problem anyway is that Bowser 8 is by far the hardest part of the game. The one time I beat the game, it was by getting the fire flower in 1-1 and just never getting hit until I ran straight through Bowser 8 lol.

I could make it to the Pipe world in SMB3, though.

I've been saving princesses since the 80's.

This pic was taken when I played through and beat it at a friend's dorm just to prove that I still could.

It was the Mario All-Stars version on Wii.

Nintendo didn't even give them the version with Mario World on it, the savages.

Does that version have continues? That would be a game changer versus the NES version.

I've beaten it many times, it's trivially easy for me now but I still go back and run through it now and then. I remember there was one night in the 90s when I beat it like a dozen times in a row cause I thought the enemies kept getting slightly faster after every completion for some reason? That and I just wanted to see how long I could go for without screwing it up.

Oh, I used warps. Sorry for the confusion. TC wasn't talking about warpless runs and I think the discussion on warping started after my post.

I didn't always know about the warps, but I never felt I legitimately beat the game until I finally did it without the warps.

it felt fun to skip some of the worst worlds, but I knew I used the handicap and that kinda took away from the sweetness of my first legit win.
