They call it "special offers" where you get ads on your homescreen you can't turn off unless you pay for a better unit or pay extra after buying one with the 'feature' enabled. Like what?

Also e-reader thread. I'm getting one for my birthday, any recommemdation?

I have a kindle paperwhite and the ad is really not that obnoxious tbh. I also have a cover for it so it's not like I'm ever looking at the ad or anything.

I also have the paper white, it works great. You can also just lie about the kindle being for your kid and that you don't want to see offers for inappropriate titles and they'll take them away for you for free. So you get an extra 20 bucks off.

I just paid for it. Works great, make sure you use your state library's e-book catalog to get free books to read.

I wonder if there's a way to, like, disable them for free. I dunno how much you can talk about that on CE, but I'm not gonna be engaging with the Amazon store to acquire books, if you get me >_> liberty generation and all that

You can disable them for free, just talk to amazon customer service to turn it off because oh noes my child. Simple.

I don't think there is. The ads only show up when you're not using it though so it's not like it's a big deal. If you buy the one without special offers it just replaced the ads with abstract art / stock photos.

Yes, you can get the ads disabled for free. Like the poster above said.

Just talk to customer service through their online chat and they'll disable it for you no charge. It's what I did when I got the new kindle paperwhite.
