President Donald Trump and his associates have given all sorts of reasons for his refusal to release his tax returns: He's under audit! Voters don't care! His taxes are too complex for regular people to understand!!

None of those reasons made -- or make -- any sense

we may know the real reason why the President is fighting so hard to keep his returns from ever seeing the light of day: Because he paid so little in taxes -- especially for someone who makes as much money as Trump does.

He's the kinda guy who would brag about paying as little in taxes as possible. Most likely it shows how much money he doesn't have but pretends to have.

The "he paid so little in taxes" excuse has been floating around for years now. It was even brought up during the general election, and he responded by saying that "you would have to be stupid to not take advantage of tax loopholes". This isn't a new argument.

The reason he hides his taxes is likely because he's worth much less than he claims. The "he doesn't pay much in taxes" reasoning just makes you look like you don't know anything about tax law.

Why does anyone even care? Do they think it'll be definitive proof that he's breaking the law? Because I'm pretty sure the IRS would have caught that by now. It's not like he's a total nobody.

Will probably help prove he's receiving money that's not being laundered or else it's from foreign government officials and further proves he's abusing his powers for personal gain.

It's about having an endless series of controversies to distract from him making any legislative progress, with a recognition that if they get extremely lucky they would find something to get him thrown out. That's all any of this has ever been.

I don't think it's because of tax loopholes, because I think even trump knows literally no on in his base will care about something like that. I think it' more likely there's something much more personally embarrassing like dealings with someone he doesn't want to be associated with or his money being tied up in a way that makes him less rich than he presents himself
