last i remember playing, i barely started. i finished the first kinda tutorial area, and i was out in the open world. i met up with some dudes and it opened up and it felt like a camp.

but now i start and its in the middle of some action where i had to escape on a ship and now im in some city. what happened???

They changed the whole startup so the war you were in the middle of is no longer the mandatory starting campaign.

Since you didnt finish it, most likely pushed you into the new starting missions

idk about the story since i mostly ignore it. but the area you're in is the tower, it's the central endgame social hub for the base version of destiny (and every version after that).

the area you were in previously that felt like a camp was the farm, that is the hub/social area for players until they beat the main campaign of destiny 2.

just go to the glowing points on the map in the tower, accept a few quests and then try to complete them, you'll get a better idea of how the game works from that
