I briefly played the original when it came out on 360 but put maybe 10 hours into it before I got too busy with random shit in life and stopped.

Just have fun. Explore the world. Do whatever the fuck you want. The main story can wait and you aren't gonna get btfo by enemies if you don't streamline your skilltree.
