It shouldn't have a problem on the hardware front. Ps4 is X86. Ps5 is X86. Only way they can screw it up is on the OS they make for PS5.

That's due to whatever idiocy is going on with Sony's decision making regarding old releases. Japan has zero PS2 classics on PS4. The library of classics for PS3/PSP is also pretty different. I still rely a lot on discs for a lot of my old favorites.

But are you confident that idiocy won't carry over to the PS5?

I agree there shouldn't be any technical reason to allow it. It's the idiocy that concerns me.

Has nothing to do with that. If it is hardware that naturally plays PS2/PS3 discs it can. There is no legal requirement to get permission to make these games playable.

No I'm saying they're legally not allowed to patch in support for NCAA as a BC game. That includes using the PS4/5 as a sideloader for older hardware.

Hardware backwards comparability isn't a 'patch in support'. It's literally a PS2/PS3 in the PS5 in whatever way they do it. I'm not sure where the misunderstanding here is.

Yeah unless there's an example of a PS4 game not working on the PS4 Pro I doubt licensing will be an issue.

I'm pretty confident that the PS5 will just work the same as that for PS4 games.

I more so want to see the entire library of PS1 games go digital (to the extant it's possible, some rights are never going to be negotiated). PS1 discs suffer damage very easily, and for rarer games this means prices will only increase. Of course emulation is always an option, but that has its own set of issues depending on the legal environment of where you live and how much the current crackdown on ROM distribution continues.
