The time is almost here. Mickey Mouse will enter the Public Domain soon, and then anyone can use the original concept behind the character into your own fiction. Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Dracula, Zorro, King Kong are some of the characters already in

Well, given Americas history on the subject and the disposition of the current administration, prospects of this actually happening look especially grim.

How is it going to the public domain? Doesn't Disney still use Mickey Mouse?

The expiration of copyrights for characters like Mickey Mouse and Batman will raise tricky new legal questions. After 2024, Disney won't have any copyright protection for Mickey's original incarnation. But Disney will still own copyrights for later incarnations of the characterand it will also own Mickey-related trademarks.

It's cute how TC thinks Disney won't have the copyright law altered for the, what, 4th time now?

They stopped doing that several years ago. It was kind of a big deal in copyright circles.

Mickey Mouse wont go into public domain, the earliest carnations of the character will though.

Nit picky but important nuance. Steamboat Willys look and character could be created. But the voice is a later incarnation. The white gloves came later. The design has changed over the years. The copyrights for those original works would still be enforced until they expire and there are trademarks as well to offer protection.

I bet a few early lawsuits by people stepping over the line will slow it down a bit.

The greatest tragedy in anime is that the official translation will likely butcher the most iconic JoJo line.

If theres no Mickey then this shit aint Disney!

Not the steamboat Willie design which is the one going into public domain unless they intervene.

Yeah it's 75 years. But I always read that is only if whoever owns it is no longer using it. Either way that still seems kind of fucked up. I mean it's basically "hey you aren't using this thing anymore so tough shit we're going to let others use it even though you created it and still own it."

Fuck Disney. Theyve built their empire on the public domain. They wont be any worse off for contributing to it.

It's not even Disney specifically. Just more so that anyone can have their creation just taken from them because it's been a long time. It would be like saying it's ok to go live in someone's summer home because they haven't been there in a while.

That's not a strong allegory you've got there.
People aren't getting their creations taken. Descendants 3 generations removed from the creator and corporations that bought rights just aren't allowed to profit of the actual creator's work indefinitely.

You now how long this shit last? I think the final draw is 70 years after the death of the original creator. They don't need more time, it's bullshit it ever got that far.
