We all know it will happen. China wants to control everything. They don't want Blizzard to back off and do the right thing.

So they will give Blizzard money in the same way they pick and choose who should win in China.

We need to act quickly and boycott Blizzard quickly. That is the only way to hurt them enough to make them reconsider. Otherwise China can trickle $$$ their way as compensation for the blatant and offensive censorship.

>_> I mean there's no capital letters in the title so it's not like it's an article title or something.

No. They won't.

Blizzard will definitely backtrack on this, rescind the ban, and say "we support people's rights to free speech."

I almost guarantee it. Because Blizzard cares about its brand more than it cares about dollars. The loss of money from brand backlash > money lost from China.

I'd like to think Blizzard will give in to pressure and backtrack, but they've shown no signs of letting up.

has a boycott worked ever?

Bus boycotts sorta "worked" considering it basically caused the Cival Right Act to get passed.

The Chick-Fil-A boycott worked, they stopped donating to anti-lgbtq groups

Yeah I doubt Blizzard will reverse their decision. I certainly don't agree with it, but the consequences were pretty clearly stated in the contract so they were well within their rights. Blitzchung knew exactly what would happen and deserves a lot of credit for saying what needed to be said anyway.

Boycotts use the threat of a loss of revenue to bludgeon a business into doing what you want. The "Chick-Fil-A boycott" immediately increased sales revenue. Just because they also decided to stay out of politics doesn't mean the boycott caused it.

Edit: not to mention, they even still donate to the same Christian organizations, they just aren't super public about it anymore.

Furry username thinks a communist government bullying a corporation is the free market at work.

No wonder economics discussions on CE are so difficult to have.

LOL

The reason why they haven't doubled down as a result of the backlash. They haven't said anything at all. Their PR department is trying to decide directly how to craft a message that allows them to stay good with China, but not lose money in all of their other markets.

China accounts for 12% of Blizzard's revenue. In response to Diablo Immortal backlash they revealed (probably prematurely) that diablo 4 was in development. Even if we were to argue that they wouldn't lose the equivalent of that through fan backlash, they would lose significant amounts of revenue for it, which in turn would make Activision and stock holders angry. They're going to want this problem to go away, and unlike Apple iPhone users, gamers have a long memory. Also Blizzcon is coming up in November, and they don't want their marketing for new products mired with a scandal literally from a month prior to it.

I'd bet my account that they'll backtrack.

I think the player's ban was within Blizzard's rights.

But firing the casters and then releasing statements that obviously contradicted the implication behind their actions is pretty scummy
