-My high school guidance counselor, despite me having good grades and better grades than most of the black kids at the school (B+ overall average) outright tried to encourage me to only apply to black colleges. A similar thing happened to my brother a few years earlier at his high school which wasn't that far away.

At least it was encouraging when Polytechnic offered me a partial scholarship.

Me personally? Zero. I'm a white dude who lives on a sparsely populated island with mostly all white people. Thankfully I don't hear much racist stuff said about the poc that do live here, though of course I've heard stereotypes about other non-white cultures.

Sad that the other thread got purged but for the slightly "deeper" threads, it probably shouldn't be here and instead preserved somewhere else.

Oh, one I haven't mentioned yet is how some tourists go to Puerto Rico and marvel at how they have things like electricity and cars, and ask where the monkeys are.

I grew up in a small white town in rural PA, so the racism was casual, but baked in.

Prime example: when I was in middle school (very early 2000's) we had a speech/oratorical competition throughout the whole grade. We were assigned topics at random (IIRC it was slips of paper drawn from a hat with topics on them) and then you had to do a speech in costume about the topic. As an example, someone got the battle of Gettysburg, so they dressed as a civil war soldier and gave a speech from the soldier's perspective. My topic was "Pennsylvania Inventions" so I dressed up as a nerd/mad scientist and gave a speech talking about my favorite inventions from Pennsylvania. You get the idea.

Well, one girl happened to draw Harriet Tubman as her topic. So, of course, she did her speech AS Harriet Tubman... in blackface. Now. We were like, 11 at the time? Maybe 12? So I don't 100% blame her for not having a solid grasp on why that was a TERRIBLE idea. But not only did every single adult let her go ahead and do this speech without batting an eye, she won the whole damn competition. This thing went multiple rounds, with people who advanced being required to give their speech over and over again to different judge panels, so she probably all in all did this fuckin blackface Harriet Tubman speech three or four times before all was said and done. And no one spoke up to say "uh, hey... this is truly bad. We shouldn't let this child do this." Even the most well-meaning, bleeding heart liberal teachers we had didn't put a stop to this.

She's married now, and her husband is black. Sometimes I wonder if he knows. And I think about that time a lot. I think about how many layers of adult supervision this girl went through without a single person being like "Um, this is horribly racist." They all just let it happen, and worse they were practically beaming with pride at how "brave" she was being for doing her speech as Tubman. Fucking wild.

Alright.

I was amazed to hear that even when I was in Singapore. They have an unofficial hierarchy of whom they're willing to rent apartments to - and on various application forms for things you are often asked to include race/ethnicity and religion.

I was fortunate that I was Chinese descent so was near the top of the list (locals, Western expats, Chinese expats) but my friends who were of Sri Lankan descent struggled to get apartments even though we were all on similar income levels (>$200k p/a).

1. a grown ass black woman online suggested that i lied when i told her i was biracial.

2. an asian female younger than 20 told me that white people shouldn't write novels.

3. a male asian student in middle school told me i was "loud" when we were talking about how to handle a school project. this happened during school and it was a normal conversation until then. i wasn't loud.

I was in the Navy and me (white) and three other white buddies went to china town in Chicago and were told by three restaurants that they were closed or didn't serve our kind. Don't know if it was because we were Navy or white, but they all showed us out as soon as we entered. Ended up going to the rock n roll McDonald's

Also grew up in rural northwest Ohio and my stepdad was a hardcore hate anything but pure white racist. Destroyed my Thriller album and told me to never bring that shit in his house again. Just couldn't understand it.

- went to happy hour with my fiancee, I got there a few minutes earlier. 5 women were at the bar next to me. My fiancee walks in and gives me a kiss, all of them get up and move to the other side of the bar. Didn't really bother me though, I'm use to black women being upset about it.

- back in college, got pulled over by an Asian cop. Have him my papers and his eyes went wide as he looked me in the eye and said "this is your car?".

- cop stops me and my brothers in queens, flat out asks where the drugs are hidden. First thing out of his mouth.

- old white woman runs a stop sign and t bones my brother and I. She calls police and says to send help, she was hit by two young black men playing rap music.

it's been a while since I have experienced it IRL. not that I'm not aware of the various levels of racist people around me, but it's not directed at me while I'm present.

the last time it happened in person was from a random Asian lady at the gas station, but it was nothing to get worked up about.

In some ways the overt racism is easier to deal with because you can see it and you know its there. Its the hidden racism which manifests itself in less obvious ways which is far harder to detect and overcome.

There are lots of places that just hate any military or police force at all. I've heard of cases where they basically take over a gym and don't respect the manager's rules, but blanket ban policies make no sense.

As someone who's lived his entire life in a homogeneous envoriment with little to no racial/religious derivation, all I can say is that people will always find something "different" in others and insult them based on that.
Even shit like accent.

1) The summer before 9th grade, I was swimming in the neighborhood pool with a couple friends. Someone called the cops on us. The police officer looked so annoyed that he got called out for that.

2) I was walking home with a group of friends and this old white guy pulled up next to us in his car and started shouting stuff at us like "We don't want you here," and "Go back to where you came from."

3) I was walking home by myself toward the back of my mom's house and some guy was honking at me from far away and waving as if to tell me to leave the area. It might have been the same guy from #2, the car was similar. Not 100% sure, though, because I was pretty far away from the car in this situation.

4) Some drunk lady on a city bus started calling me racial slurs out of nowhere.

Your post has me reading up on blackface. As it reads, blackface is when it's done as a caricature with exaggerated features in order to demean or mock. If you're in character as someone, and it's not done in a demeaning way, then it doesn't seem to be considered blackface.

There appears to be a lot of blurred lines on what is and isn't considered blackface. For instance, Robert Downy jr's character in tropic thunder is not considered blackface. He was playing a character, and it wasn't done in an overtly offensive way.

Now, i don't know what this girl did in your story, as you didn't go into details about her look. It may have been done in a caricature manor.

Some say it was done well and not did in a derogatory and demeaning fashion, so it was ok.

Was denied a promotion opportunity at a previous job. It was given to a new hire who is a terrible engineer and left halfway through the project due to being incompetent. But she checked all the HR checkboxes and the company wanted to "diversify" the higher ranks, which is why she got the project.

Was the only white kid at the inner city school I went to so I got picked on a lot because of being white.

There isnt a disagreement. Hes white. He put on dark brown makeup to darken his skin to play a black man.

It wasnt disrespectful because it was a comedy movie in which he played an actor who was in did it for a role. RDJ didnt do it, his character did.

Stop using Tropic Thunder as a form of "accepted black face" when the shit is criticized within the very same film.

-A group of us were going to my friend's house back in 7th or 8th grade, but right outside, my friend told me that his mother said that I can't come in. I was the only black kid in that group. Even now, 20 years later, if I see him outside when he is walking with his mother, he doesn't say hi to me in front of her.
