Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like

- you can't convict a sitting president of a crime
- a republican majority will never allow an impeachment
- even if an impeachment happens you'll end up with mike pence

I gotta wonder at this point if democrats are putting all their eggs in the wrong basket again

Republicans don't have the majority in the House, which is the part that votes to impeach. They do however have the majority in the Senate which decides whether or not he's guilty.

You can impeach without actually removing them from office. Actually, that would be the ideal if we can't get Pence to also be impeached alongside Trump, as it would effectively make Trump a lame duck president and his ego would prevent him from even considering resignation.

We should just abolish impeachment. If you break laws, you just go to court and get thrown in jail if sentenced to that. No more special treatment.

Trump needs to be impeached because it is the right thing to do. Our society cares way too much about the expedience of holding people accountable.

If you abolish impeachment what you really do os take away your one option to remove a criminal president, because its already been established you cant charge a sitting president with a crime.

True as far as it goes, but this is part of what the impeachment process is for: to make him stop being a sitting President, so that you can move on ahead with the trial process.

- a republican majority will never allow an impeachment

That is looking less and less certain by the day.

- even if an impeachment happens you'll end up with mike pence

Unless he is impeached too. Even if he is not, I'm not sure he isn't preferable.

Even if Trump got removed and replaced by Pence, how much can he do in the time he would have? He doesn't have the House, and he's not as impulsive or stupid as Trump. Trump should be held accountable anyway.

I am literally saying we should directly charge sitting Presidents with crimes

i thought this too but with the way he's attacking romney i am starting to wonder

i think it's a sort of double bind: what he did was fundamentally wrong, and easy to understand, the public knows it and does understand. democrats are just "following the law", so the GOP is left between a rock and a hard place.

they can either stand by party lines and refuse to enforce the law--thereby alienating all independents who understand that this is a crime, or stand by the law and alienate the trump cultists who don't care about our republic and only care about their white power messiah.

either way that means setting themselves up for a massive loss in the election, which is the point. impeaching over an easily understood issue that the public will recognize as a matter of law and order means that politics can be played effectively by democrats while still playing by the rules...for once.

The establishment of this is less firm than many have been led to believe; it's just something Nixon's lawyers made up in the 70s.
