Current Events > So I'm homeless and disabled. The shelter is full. Any advice?

I made a thread on reddit as well for support/advice.

I have Ulcerative Colitis in addition to an undiagnosed GI condition that doctors suspect to be Gastroparesis (I'm still looking into this myself). This combination has left me unable to work full time and I need money to hold me over until either I recover or my disability claim goes through.

I tried to avoid sharing this the public and only asked my friends, but I'm out of options now.

My former friend invited me to live with them in Connecticut so I could take advantage of the medical care in the state. I moved from Virginia to CT with them via train which(the trip itself was difficult) on July 23rd. Within a week my friend had a breakdown, tried to kill me indirectly, and left me homeless. Since then I've been relying on my friends for support. I've been to the ER 4 times and had to spend a little over 2 weeks in the hospital. Right now I'm hoping to get enough money to stay at cheap motels until they have space at the shelter for me.

Any help or advice is appreciated. If anyone wants more details of my situation I'm happy to provide them.

My advice is to post this on Reddit. You will probably find people much more knowledgeable about resources available to you that can hook you up with proper assistance.

I know that you should apply for Medicaid and SSDI but I'm not sure how to get that information to you. I think the post office or social security office might have the forms you need. Not sure where those are in your location.

I've been reading up on state benefits, and the surprising amount of things available at town halls. I'm in NJ, but maybe they can direct me to something on a federal level.

On top of what Ty suggested, look into EBT / Foodstamps if you haven't already.

I come from poverty. They don't have a lot to help with but they try. They don't really have anything left at this point.

No employers here will take anyone that is homeless, it's to the point where hiring managers even know this shelter's address by memory and immediately dismiss any applications coming out of it.

Seriously, the only guys here who still have jobs are only because their workplace doesn't know where they actually live. Subsequently, info like that *has* been weaponized between hobos here looking to get revenge on someone they have a beef with; Find out where they work, drop some truth bombs on the boss with proof, watch their foe come in the same/next day raging/crying about getting fired.

Shit is fucked here.

If you have a car, you can read up on ways to conceal the inside so you can sleep in different places. There are some comprehensive homeless manuals online. I read up on them some when I was in college just wondering what if. Food is abundant though. Once trash is thrown out by businesses, its free game. The only caveat is you gotta be low key so you dont get trespassed or noticed by cops (who will basically try to get the owner to trespass you).

I think I found a place that's primarily for students. Fairly cheap. I explained my situation and I think they're willing to help.
