The idea that Kojima failed in the film indistry is a common misconception. He did pursue a career in film whem he was young, but actually swapped to video games before even finishing his degree.

You have to write a game story differently from a movie story, and it seems like a lot of people don't understand that. Take MGS1 for example. The story is a pattern of failure and redemption, where Snake screws something up and the player gets the chance to redeem him. In a movie, we would find this pattern infuriating but in a game, it strokes our egos. Snake lets Cyborg Ninja escape, the player gets to beat him up. There was a review that came out around release which alleged that it had multiple cutscenes approaching 90 minutes in length, but this actually isn't true. The longest run of cutscenes in the game is the ending, which runs right around 1 hour in length, including the end credits.
