Co-worker of mine had too much the night before. Blew a 0.031 for a random. Possibly getting fired tomorrow. He's a great worker and knows his shit.

Hell give him a written warning saying if he messed up again he's fired. Even a week suspension if they feel they have to do something. But don't just fire him. He's a valuable member of the team.

Drinking too much the night before work impairs your ability to work and reaction time, to be fair. The fact that he blew anything more than 0.02 means he was still affected the next day. He must have been wasted as fuck.

Unless you're you need your hands for precision that's horse shit. I do my job better most of the time because I just want to get the hell outta there. The sooner the better.

We work in an oilfield lab. He probably was pretty drunk the night before. He's been having trouble sleeping so he got kinda hammered last night to knock himself out.

He knows he fucked up. But to get fired when you have a basically 2 year spotless record otherwise is pretty messed up imo

A more senior member of the team suggested he could go through the substance abuse program, even though he doesn't probably have a problem. That sounds like a fair idea to me. They shot her down.

Like why do we even have EAP when we have zero tolerance then?

EAP is employee assistance program if anyone doesn't know. Supposed to help you out with home life problems INCLUDING substance abuse. Apparently that's a lie.

Exactly. On a given day you could breathalyze the whole facility and I bet like half a dozen peeps wouldn't be sober.

If he'd gotten injured or something, then yeah fire him. Completely black and white situation. But he didn't.

Probably like 4ish? So he definitely messed up by drinking too much the night before. But I think they could easily give him another chance.

I really hope not. We need him. Long story short another lab tech has a good chance of being fired soon. But they deserve it for being a worthless pile of garbage. Stuff like on the clock while at home. Intentionally sabotaging other tech's work to make them look bad. Lazy. I have very little I positive things I could say about them.

Also with him gone there's only 3 of us including the worthless one. So yeah I'm not too worried about my job. They need me more than I need them. I could easily find a job doing similar work if I needed to. And they know that. I'm not even bragging. the fact that I have a chemistry degree and going on 4 years of experience in this specific kind of lab setting is pretty rare.

Four hours into the shift and blowing a .031 means he probably showed up to work with a BAC of about .09. At that point it's less of a zero tolerance policy and more a guy showing up to work drunk.

Again I'm not defending his actions. He fucked up. But an otherwise basically spotless record over 2 years I think deserves a 2nd chance

Agreed. He didn't wildly spin out of control and kill a bunch of skunks on his way to work so that's something to consider. He was that level headed. Ease the fuck up.

Hell at my old job back in the early 2010s a supervisor got in a physical fight with a company man out on location. He got a suspension, but got to keep his job because he was otherwise a really good supervisor. If you don't work in oil I think you just won't understand. It's a different culture. Hell even our HR lady is pretty informal. She'll cuss right along with the rest of us and make inappropriate jokes. She's awesome. Most other HR people I've encountered have been douches.

I worked in pipeline and it wouldn't surprise me if every single hand working was half drunk in the morning.

Why did they decide to rando his ass? He probably had that booze stink still on him or his breath.
Just luck of the draw. He'd been randomed couple weeks ago too. The more senior co-worker I was talking about has been around a long time. She said for whatever reason if you get randomed once you keep getting randomed. He passed fine before. Oilfield does a lot of randoms because a lot of field peeps have to have CDLs. But they don't separate office personnel from field personnel. So sometimes you get nailed a couple times not too far apart. I've been with this company about 1.5 years haven't had a single one. First oil lab job did 3 years only got one ever. Co-worker of mine who doesn't even drink got like 5 randoms in the about same 3 years. It's weird.

depends on what it is

zero tolerance policy on say, violence (read: being punished for defending yourself), absolutely dumb

zero tolerance policy for say, smoking, perfectly OK

That's not an example of a zero tolerance rule.

In this case, your co-worker broke exactly the spirit of the rule, and the rule is working as intended. "getting hammered the night before" isn't a great excuse

Tell that to my coworker from my pharma job. Dude came in hammered every single day. But we needed him because on paper he was an amazing chemist. So management pretended they didn't know. He was basically kept on staff for his signature. Didn't do a damn thing when he would actually show up for work. Finally got fired after a whole year of that bullshit, not for drinking on the job, but for missing too much work. Life is fucking bullshit man. That dude made 80K for being a drunk asshole at work more or less.

When you can't sleep for about a week straight I can't blame the guy.

I basically had a mental breakdown at my pharma job which included severe anxiety. Went 2 weeks straight averaging 2 hours a night. You start feeling like you're going crazy. If I hadn't been so depressed I probably would have tried the bottle too tbh.

Whatever I'm out. Johnny seems to be the only poster in here capable of seeing life as not so black and white. The argument as I've stated multiple times is not that he fucked up. Obviously he did and I've stated that multiple times. But to get rid of a great lab tech over a 0 tolerance rule is one of those shades of grey areas

Between this job and my old job I've done this for 4 years. I've seen a lot of really good techs and a lot of really bad techs. This guy definitely falls on the good side. He just made a mistake. Probably something most of you guys have actually made and not even realized it.

It's the oilfield. If you haven't worked in it you wouldn't understand. It's not even weird to do that. Field guys at my old job would brag about how drunk they got the night before. Coming in technically still drunk was just one of those common things management turned a blind eye to. They took turns who stayed sober so they could be the driver in the morning.

I'm not saying that justifies it. But it's normal.

And no it wasn't some mom and pop operation. My old job was at halliburton. One of the biggest players on the service industry side.
