Our new house is starting to get cold so I decided to turn the heat on for the first time since moving in in August. Just had it set to 72 degrees and it kicked on and started heating up right away. Good, wanted to make sure it works now before it gets too cold later this year.

Started feeling a bit too hot and went to check the thermostat - 76 degrees with hot air still blowing from the vents.

I set the thermostat to "off" and went back to what I was doing. About 15 minutes later went back and noticed the hot air still blowing and the house was now at 78 degrees.

The fuck? I set it to AC at 74 and it got down to that temp and finally everything shut off.

My last house it would get maybe 1 or 2 degrees higher than set temp and then shut off, and would shut off almost immediately when turning the thermostat off.

I have a home warranty so I can have it repaired for just a $75 deductible if there's actually an issue with it but I'd hate to pay $75 just for a guy to come out and look at me like I'm an idiot and tell me it's working as intended.

What do?

I work in HVAC.
First guess without being physically present is that there is something wrong with the thermostat while your furnace is completely fine.

Mine works in a similar way but less extreme. Like it will get like 2 degrees over what I set it and then kick off. If I turn it off it will often continue to blow but only for like five minutes.

It seems to go through a certain cycle based off of where the settings/temperature is at during the beginning of the cycle. So I have to wait for that cycle to end for any changes that i make to kick in. Idk shit about furnaces and I rent so I dont care to look into it but that seems to be how mine works.

Any idea what could be wrong with it? It's a Honeywell Pro Series that just plugs into the wall - ran the AC as programmed just fine the past two months
