That's insanely fast. Would basically make so much air travel unnecessary.

What's amazing to me is China was celebrating that they finally had the ability to make their own ballpoint pens like a year ago, and now they're talking about this.

The last thing the automotive industry here needs are trains eating up their potential consumers is my 5c why it was phased out instead of built up early in the 20th century.

High speed rail needs to be a thing in North America so, so bad.

Like imagine if living a half hour from work meant you could live hundreds of miles away.

RIP high real estate prices

That + more construction would revolutionize the economy

That's basically my line of thinking.

At those speeds it would take less than an hour to get from the Oregon/California border to Sacramento/San Francisco/San Jose, or less than half an hour to get there from say Reno or Carson City.

At that point I wonder how you deal with the tax implications.

There is already a process for dealing with that. Lots of people live in one state (Indiana) and work in another (Illinois) so it isn't a problem

Yeah but this could do that on a mass scale we've never seen before.

Like if half a State's working population (maybe an extreme example, idk) didn't even live in that state that's a ton of money that leaves the state and never "returns".

The main complication is stops. You can go a million miles an hour but if it takes 2 counties to get up to that speed safely and you put a train stop at twice that rate you'll never actually achieve "high speed". And that assumes you can land grab enough to make the rail a straight line in the first place.

What would happen is we'd build a 700mph train that would never break 60mph and stop at every town along the way to cover costs, making what would otherwise be a 3 hour drive into a 4 hour train ride, or alternatively it would only stop at like 4 places and cost $200 each way per day.
