I thought it would be a game where you lose all your gold but keep all your cells but I lose those too, so what am I even carrying over each run?

You do keep gold eventually. It might be an upgrade, I haven't played for a long time, sorry. But you definitely do eventually (by the second boss from what I remember) keep I think 80% of gold.

You unlock blueprints which are drops that have a chance to drop.
So like you unlock "super duper mace" blueprint, means it can drop.

You get to keep the stuff you unlock with cells, those are permanent.

So are runes which allows you to climb, smash floors, etc.

That's the risk-reward... do you spend all your cells at the upgrade guy on some minor permanent improvement, or save them in the hopes you don't die between this and the next upgrade guy so you can upgrade something better.

Spend your cells at the Collector after every level. Most of the stuff you can spend cells on are unlocked via blueprints that you get from enemies and then subsequently give to the Collector. So at the early stage of the game, just collect blueprints and buy a couple weapons or abilities or traits that you think look cool.

There's also a Forge after every boss that you can spend cells on. It will increase the quality of weapons and abilities you pick up in the world.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I am dying pretty quickly but I do enjoy the fact that you can save in the middle of a run anywhere

Pretty sure if you exit out anywhere you come back to the exact same spot

Keep at it, you'll gradually get better and more prepared each run as you upgrade your potions, starting gold, random gear at starting point, and the forge.

One tip that will be very useful later on is to not underestimate shields. They may seem like a really lame choice, but they will become a godsend once you get to higher difficulties.
