Ive always referred to it as tapping gently on your brakes, enough to where you dont slow down but the break light comes on, to tell the person behind you to fuck off. Used for tailgaters.

But I see a lot of people equate a brake check to slamming on your brakes to show somebody a lesson.

Am I wrong, or are those other people? /skinner

It's the other peoples explanation. It's an aggressive movie to pretty much try to make the other person rear end you.

Softly tapping in order to deter a tailgater is fine. Slamming on your brakes hoping to cause an accident is just as idiotic as tailgating.

Softly tapping to deter a tailgater is not fine, and is dumb.

It can be hard to swallow your pride and "admit defeat" letting some asshole tailgater pass you, but that's the safest thing to do. Move over, let the tailgater pass, and be on your way.

One time i had a guy tailgating me so i did my version of a brake check. Just light enough to trigger the light but no slow down.
I look back and dude is now like 50 ft back. Id say it's pretty successful though i don't know if the guy panicked rather than made an informed choice. He coulda slammed on his brakes when i didnt causing an accident behind me.

It's as dangerous as tailgating is. Never mind if the tailgater rear ends you, what if they lock up their brakes and cause another accident and then innocent third parties are getting involved/injured/killed... It's just not worth it.

In no way am I defending tailgating or suggesting they be allowed to get away with their behavior, but brake checking is dangerous behavior, too.

Softly tapping only "deters" a tailgater if it causes them to react as though you slammed on your brakes, which means they're braking hard and can potentially cause an accident. If they're tailgating you in the first place, they're not going to care that you're showing them your brake lights work. They're only going to back off if they think they need to slow down dramatically to avoid hitting you.

Gradually slowing down is one of the better ways to deal with tailgaters. One of three things will happen:

-They'll get fed up and pass you when possible
-They'll take the hint and stop crowding you if they can't pass
-If they continue tailgating you, going slower means you'll have more time to react to anything that happens and therefore reduce the likelihood of needing to stop suddenly enough to be rear-ended

Sure, it sucks that you have to be slowed down by some idiot that doesn't know how to drive, but it's the safest option.

I just drive the speed limit.
Or maybe the same speed as the guy next to me.

Tapping breaks is dangerous.

False. Not the safest option, because you risk triggering someone's road rage.

Safest option is to move out of their way and let them pass. If you're on a one-lane road, pull over when it's safe to do so and let them pass.

I don't know what the best solution is but if somebody is on my ass slowing down to pull over doesn't make me feel comfortable either unless there is enough space to do it without slowing down.

This should go without saying. I'm not advising you increase the chance of an incident in getting out of the way.
