Putting the money aside, imagine struggling as an artist for years, a decade or two even, and then you get that one chart hit and it was written by someone else.
Alien Ant Farm, Smooth Criminal UB40, Red Red Wine Michael Andrews and Gary Jewels, two relatively no-name musicians that covered Mad world by Tears for Fears etc. Even worse - imagine this being your biggest career success ever, and it's still worse than the original? LIke Orgy covering Blue Monday. Who? Yeah, exactly. --- CE's Resident Scotsman. https://imgur.com/ILz2ZbV ... Copied to Clipboard!

Most of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' hits were covers like "I Love Rock n Roll," "Crimson & Clover," and "Do You Wanna Touch".
But they also made "Bad Reputation," which is original and one of the greatest songs of all time. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

It must be a bit disheartening as an artist if your biggest hit is a cover.

What about when covers become more well known than their originals and people think the original artist covered the uh, cover artist?
Like Bowies Man Who Sold The World and Nine Inch Nails' Hurt. To this day I still hear people who think it's a Johnny Cash song . ... Copied to Clipboard!

I don't think they mind that much as the cover/remix/mashup ethos has been accepted by musicians and fans alike. Making music is collaborative effort and you'd be hard pressed to find any music that's completely original and new.

I don't think it's necessarily disheartening. Some artists are quite content with writing stuff that doesn't appeal to the mainstream.
