All the people I hear that from are in their 70s, 80s and older. They look at the past and only see it through rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, not even realizing that, for people other than them, things are better now than when they were kids. The phrase that always comes to mind for me is the lyric at the end of the song "Anticipation" by Carly Simon when she mentions that 'these are the good old days'.
