Arguably one of the more prevalent verbal ticks. A bad habit, but not as bad as vocal fry or "Like" from the mid 2000s

I edit a lot of audio of myself for something I do, and "y'know" tends to be my vocal tic.

But I write "I mean" a lot on here.

OH MY FUCKING GOD I HATE THAT

I noticed it in AA meetings and it's ruined my life.

There's one guy who can talk for four minutes and quite literally use "y'know" over 150 times.

I fucking counted.

It's actually pretty fascinating that it has disappeared and reappeared throughout the American verbal lexicon in the past 100 years.

Ya, language can be rather fluid.

There's a radio show titled, A Way with Words, it's well done, and kinda fun to hear questions regarding stuff like this.

Yeah I say that online and in real life. Its a useful small injunction to throw into sentences.

It works a lot better in real life though imo. Online I get that it can be a lil annoying to read as part of an argument.

I definitely use it online, although I tend to erase it if I edit after posting because its a mostly pointless phrase unless you're clarifying something.

I think I use it sometimes irl too, but i'm not sure.

Depends on the setting. Saying "like" every third word in a professional meeting isn't a good look.

I read this as a philosophical declaration. Same cadence as "I think, therefore I am."

Except this time it means you suck at doing things.

Another one is putting So apparently before a sentence. They dont add anything. I can understand using them. In speech, but it annoys me when I see news articles from people that went to college for journalism and they are doing these things.

why's there no poll option for both since I definitely do it both in speech and writing online

well, I definitely try to write similar to how I speak. italics or even bold for words I would normally emphasize vocalling in some way, throw in an ellipsis here and there, make weird run on sentences that would get said out loud all the time but just make it look like you didn't proofread while writing, etc. So I'm not too surprised I do both.

I actually feel somewhat uncomfortable texting because I feel like you're less free with paragraphs / line spacing and also because without italics supported my only emphasis option is ALL CAPS which has a very different feel to it
