I tried playing it again after years of not playing it. Holy fuck has the game changed, people are able to summon like half their deck in one turn, pendulums seem almost broken, links are just as broken/confusing, and the banlist is so all over the place. In the game I was playing yesterday I think the dude spent more time reading me his card effects more than he was actually playing the game lol

I quit IRL years ago but have kept up with the game through online simulators and watching a few tournaments.

Pendulums were never broken outside of one archetype, and through the majority of the Pendulum era, Xyz-focused decks were still much more common and much more powerful. Look up Zoodiacs if you want to see how absurdly powerful and spammy Xyz decks in that era could be. Master Rule 4 in the Link era (putting a limit on non-Link extra deck summons until after you had Link monsters out) was made almost entirely in response to how dominant Zoodiacs were. I believe there was one tournament where 31 of the top 32 decks were some kind of Zoodiac deck.

Unfortunately, Links turned out to be almost as spammy, to the point where the ace monster of the anime's main protagonist was banned for the first time in the card game's entire history. But several different kinds of decks can reach that level of spam and not just one, so it's okay.
