When being fat became easy and cheap and not something you could only accrue with wealth

When obtaining a muscular physique became something easier to accrue for wealthy people

When being educated on health and physical fitness because a class distinction

When the industrial revolution ensured that menial jobs could be even lazier than well paying ones

Relatively speaking, most wealth & status symbols are an exercise of impracticality. When being fat was difficult because the of the scarcity of food, it was valued. Now that we have cheap & abundant high fattening food, it's more attractive to have a body mostly only attainable by the ability to sink excess time in a gym.

Also why for lighter skinned people, tanning is a status symbol that is possible from being able to leisurely lounge in the sun when it was once shunned as something people who did excess physical labor outdoors attained. Most people spend their time inside nowadays, so being able to tan is mostly something that says you have time to waste on something like that.
