last I checked, this kids apology was recieved very well. It was very contrite and seems to really show some humility and willingness to grow, which is the most anyone can reasonably ask for. might he lose out on an opportunity or 2 somewhere down the line? probably, but such is the fate of anyone who puts or tacitly endorses offensive (even in the name of comedy) shit online.

Couple points to note:

1. The article that was written about this dude was a large feature, and only mentioned the tweets in question in two small paragraphs near the end of the article. They werent the focus of the piece at all.

2. The guy held released his apology/press conference statement ahead of the article being published, which generated extra media attention to it.

People framing this as some kind of hit piece that backfired are either incredibly misinformed or incredibly dishonest.

That's kinda weak and cop out excuse, tbh. People like you are the ones who make us go back to 2005 on MySpace to make sure we delete any offensive comedy from the mid-2000's.

The entire point of this is that you shouldn't have to go back 10 years to someone's past to see if they deserve recognition when society itself was in an entire different place 10 years ago. Even stuff like SNL and WWF/WWE back in 2000 that was the norm for comedy like trans jokes would be abolished today. You can't get mad for someone posting in that current climate of 2010 and 9 years later, point and cry about it due to the times changing.

The idea of somehow ignoring racist shit in ones past is steeped in white privilege. You notice how these kinds of stories almost always involve white people...some of them really think their racism should somehow be absolved if they did it as a teenager. fuck outta here.

Rules of the internet, but especially Twitter:

1. Don't post anything that can even slightly be interpreted as offensive in any way under your name.

2. Wipe your social media every few years

3. Don't use social media at all if you're a public figure, or if you do, leave it entirely to posting news feeds or something

Learned this when I was a damn kid. No names. No pictures. Nothing.

Now i still have social media so somethings are unavoidable. But just keep it as vague and private as possible.

It's basically a modern-day equivalent of witch hunt mobs from the olden days.

Step 1: One person gets angry
Step 2: Everyone else believes that one person, regardless of context
Step 3: Scapegoat gets utterly, mercilessly destroyed
Step 4: A few people wonder if that was the right thing to do

Step 5: Repeat
