Same with fight sticks in fighting games, which is funny because both are the preferred and highly recommended way to play certain games. I'm super stomped when I have to use them.

Unless it's something basic like Unreal or Quake, I'm bad at trying to play most things that require loots of actions with multiple buttons on keyboard. But something like Mirror's Edge sounds like a nightmare with K+M to me.

I feel the same way. Only RTS or 4X games can be played with a K+M to me, everything else needs a controller.

They keyboard is awkward, but the mouse is way better.

Only thing that would be better would be a light gun nunchuck combo (come to think of it, the Wii did this).

Arcade sticks are actually terrible for fighting games. People just don't want to let go of their muscle memory on them

Hitbox is objectively better

I play shmups religiously and you need an arcade stick. It took a few weeks of dedication to really adjust but I can never go back. It also helped my game tremendously.

I remember playing Overwatch with half a controller (basically only using the left side of the controller) and mouse setup. Would still do that to this day if I really wanted to play Overwatch. Fuck the keyboard. I type like 10 words per minute and the only class I ever failed in high school was some computer class where I lost alot of grade due to how slow I was with typing.

Me and Keyboard do not mix. Lol

A stick is supposed to be for analog input, but fighting games don't use analog controls

Moving a stick to register a button press... or you could just push the button directly? What's better?

Buttons, because you're not limited to a single input at a time like you are with a stick, which allows for some neat tricks, and it's possible that pushing a button is faster, too.
.
I don't know what you mean by analog controls, though. No definition of analog that I know of is relevant, or would make a difference.

You get used ot it. When I started playing on console it was rough, now going back to PC for anything that isn't turn-based is an adjustment.

@MarthGoomba

I am familiar with analog and digital i/o, I know that analog sticks track precise movement, and I know that arcade sticks traditionally, and typically, work on four cardinal microswitches rather than tracking precise movement

Apparently I have a lack of knowledge on what you're talking about, though, which is why I ask.

Okay, sorry, two questions to be clear and concise:

Why is it bad?
Arcade sticks are typically digital, hence my mentioning the cardinal microswitches. So I have to ask what your definitions of analog and digital controls are, and why you don't think sticks are digital.

I mean they separate the console players from PC players in OW because the console players would get rekt by PC players.

Alright, I was thinking of the electronic process, but you just meant literal, actual, hand-on-stick movement. My bad.

Sticks have gates and almost no dead center, so for typical fighting game purposes, very little movement is wasted. Buttons do have the higher potential for efficiency, but that doesn't make a stick terrible.

For the record, nothing in this world is better for churning butter than the pdp fightpad, of which I own at least 20.

This. Controllers are best for platformers and depending on the controls, third person adventure. First person is way better with the mouse.

Even for FPS games a lot of the times I prefer a controller, unless it's something basic like Quake or Unreal where all you have to do is run, jump and shoot.

For most third person shooters, I use controller with aim assist.
Like for gta online, if I jump into a lobby without aim assist, I use mouse and keyboard lol.

For first person, its mouse and keyboard.

For car and flying games, I use controller.

I think in first person games, you're meant to think the camera is your head or your eyes. I literally flick around so rapidly l, if I hear a noise from behind, I can 180 in a split second.

If you watch me play, you might get motion sickness lol. So I think this is the reason why some games demonstrate their gameplay at conventions using a controller even though the game is primarily developed for pc.

You can do an instant 180 sweep with a mouse while a controller is much more sluggish. It takes a lot longer to aim in general with a controller while a mouse you can aim where you want to pretty much instantly. I won't pretend I'm well versed in MLG at all but I think most pro players use mouses. I also find right clicking faster than pushing the trigger buttons.

I understand that and exactly why a mouse is better for FPS games. But they're just not for me personally. It feels awkward. It's the keyboard mainly. That's why, as a total package, I prefer controllers.

Oh yeah, the keyboard is definitely the most awkward part lol. Which is why I find platformers the hardest since you need precise movements for those. I played Kirby on keyboard a year ago and I was having over 10 times the trouble I had on a DS.
