It was very divisive back in the day and got the nickname "Celda". I feel like it was a bunch of loud, angry man-children that think Zelda games have to look mature are who pushed against this style.

I like it

Remember art style was the bone of contention for all these Zelda games while everyone ignored the fact they were all virtually the same game in the end.

I always liked it. I think the only people that had opposition to it were insecure teenagers worried that other people would think they were playing a game that looks like it is for little kids. Who gives a fuck LOL

Not gonna lie I did feel that this style was not right for Zelda, OOT, MM and TP are more in the Lord of the Rings kind of vibe, while WW and PH were more in the power puff girls kind of vibe, with modern zeldas falling in between.

Its not WRONG, just different from the LOTR Zeldas I like

This is a misconception.

I like Mario cartoony and happy. I like yoshi games cartoony and happy too. Kirby can be pastel and full of candies.

Star Fox, Metroid and Zelda? Those should be a bit more... I dont want to say realistic, but more like Metroid prime and Zelda TP

nah, they wrapped up all the loose ends and padded over the cut content with a big fetch quest that involved the whole world, but it wraps up quickly in such a way that it's not surprising they planned it to be bigger.

on the art-style question, nah it looks nice. different isn't bad, and the faces allowed them to actually give Link a character, which they've failed on in every other game

I don't really know, I think I've heard they rushed the game out.

Either way, it's still the only Zelda I've played that felt compromised in some way. It's the same way I felt when playing FFXV (and to an extent MGSV). They're still good, but clearly things had been compromised and removed due to time or technical limitations.

Yeah WW was quite substantially unfinished compared to what they were originally planning. Aunoma stated it was two full dungeons late in the game in an interview a few years back when the HD rerelease was coming out.

It was okay, though a jarring shift in tone for the series, considering the last game before it was the very dark Majora's Mask. Celda showed off Gamecube's great graphical capabilities of the day, but really looked its best when emulators could run it, and the HD Wii U remake was released.

I didn't like the game itself at all, though.

I hated it then and I hate it now. Odd I am on with the New game since it seems like it should be less epic, but for a true epic story that wasn't doing it for me. And double so when they showed that cool looking demo.

They just looked terrible on the original DS. Toon Link doesn't translate well at all to anything of too low of a resolution.

I liked WW for the most part, but didn't like the visual / art style and still don't. I'm not a fan of LA's remake either, and while it doesn't bother me quite as much as WW's, If they remake any other of the portable Zelda games I hope they go for a more realistic look.

At least WW had the round little faces and chibi link art style.

The newer zeldas try to have a OOT style for the designs but with the cell shading, it looks like shit

It also doesn't help that the remake is shorter due to the Swift Sail and shortened Tri Force Quest.

I actually thought it looked better on Gamecube for the most part. It looked more like an actual cartoon as opposed to a video game.

I wasn't a fan when it was revealed and honestly, if I had to chose a style for a new Zelda it still wouldn't be the Toon style. That said, I still preorded the game and the official players guide and played the hell out of it and definitely got a great appreciation for the style, it just took me a bit of time.

Funny enough, I remember being super hyped for Twilight Princess, because while Wind Waker's art ended up being pretty cool, this looks like the Zelda I always wanted. Then I remember getting super bored with just how brown, dull, and bleh everything looked. Still enjoyed the game but I missed the character that Wind Waker had.

I think where Skyward Sword, and even more so, Breath of the Wild, landed on style-wise is ideal. "Realistic" designs, but with a much more diverse color-scheme.
