For those who don't know, I do security overnight on weekdays. The last few weeks at one of my buildings, there's been a group of asshole homeless people who make a mess and take ages to pack up, then complain I'm sending them out into the rain when they've been told not to return or I'll get the cops. Tuesday and Wednesday morning another one of their friends I've not seen until this week showed up. Ended up needing to call the cops both mornings to get him to move. Wednesday in particular he gave me his full name and promised that he would "push me down and teach me a lesson" for bothering him.

Based off that, I knew he'd do something Thursday morning when I went to that building. And I knew he'd be there because idiots like that are more predictable than an antivaxxer in an argument citing some blog. It was clear weather conditions but night, and he was the only one in the doorway. I went to wake him up, he got pissed. I walked half a block away, he got angry and on his feet saying some nonsense and asking if I heard him when he said he wasn't going to move. Since I didn't say yes he started running at me. I booked it the other way, towards the bar that was open and had a security guard usually standing outside. I fell, and the homeless guy started yelling with that "why are you running" nonsense, as though he hasn't been threatening me or doing anything to get close enough to hurt me.

Well, that's when I shouted I'm calling the cops on him for trespassing. I was still not all the way to the bar yet. As I gave the street address and description, the guy booked it at me yelling some nonsense about me starting all this BS and making it worse. He grabbed one of those like 5 gallon buckets from the sidewalk, it was in front of a restaurant, some cooking thing or whatever. I blocked that and that's when he got in range.

I had the cell phone in my left hand and raised that arm to block as he swung with his right hand. He didn't connect but then tried to grab me like that. I had tucked my head in so the arm covered my ear, side of my face, and top of my head on that side as well as making most of my neck harder to hit. The guy didn't actually hit me hard, my mom's hit me harder doing a stomach jab when I make really smart ass jokes. But that said, I jabbed at the guy's face with my pen, didn't pierce skin but definitely scratched him. One of those standard BIC pens, nothing fancy like a calligraphy one.

The bar security guard had gotten on the scene by then and grabbed the guy to pull him off me. Because the homeless guy had his right arm near my left arm that was guarding, it pulled that arm of mine down and I was exposed. Homeless guy swung at me and made some light contact so to help push him further away, I clocked him square in the right cheek and maybe eye with the cell phone hand... By which I mean, the cell phone jabbed him pretty good.

The other guard let the guy go, homeless guy ran and dragged his stuff to his friends who for once were not set up in the doorway. They dragged it into their tent as I moved towards the bar with the other guard. The cops showed up (like 4 card), I gave them the description, all but one went off around the area looking for the guy as the other got the info for the incident. No luck finding him when the cars came back a few minutes later.

Other guard gave me some ibuprofen and a glass of water from the bar, we chatted some. Then maybe 10-15 minutes after the cops had left, the homeless guy came back. I had the other guard back me up so I could get close enough to verify it was the guy. The guy pulled out a butter knife and brandished it, other guard opened up his baton, and I called the cops.

The idiot guy kept calling me a bitch and wimp, then grabbed his stuff and tried going to sleep. Under a minute later, 5-6 cop cars pulled up because I'd reported the knife. They grabbed him, and he ended up crying and saying something about just wanting to get back to sleep.

The guy said some nonsense to them about how I harassed him first, and of course was an idiot and even shouted that when he got out he'd "find and hurt me, that's not a threat that's a promise" and the cops all basically had a "this guy's a fucking moron, lmao" expression in response to that. Then the guy started crying (like, sobbing and whatnot) as he said I hit him in the eye and that he just wanted to get some sleep.

Ended up spending a few hours with a supervisor filling out reports and calling it in to file a worker's comp claim, etc. And yeah, that was definitely the most unpleasant part of the whole experience.

Despite brandishing a knife, since he didn't explicitly threaten using it the prosecutor only went with
*Attempted assault (would have been assault but I didn't actually have any injuries, probably just for the ease of prosecution)
*Harassment
*Trespassing

Yeah, I'm pressing charges.

That said, the worst and only actual injury I got was from falling as I ran away the first time, and I did that to myself. :l

And yeah, my favorite part was that when he was crying, some of the cops actually had to turn away to hide their laughter under their breaths. Guy called me a little bitch when he's the one who cried about getting hit in the eye during a fight he started, and crying about not getting his nappy wappy.

The law can be awkward concerning that stuff since you need a license to do security in Oregon, and making first contact in most circumstances isn't a good idea. And of course, it wasn't until he was hitting me that I would have been sure of how hard he hits.

The laws since I'm an unarmed security officer make it so I can't really do that. That said, if I happen to have a pocket knife I use for utility purposes or whatever and I did end up in a situation where I feared for my life then yeah, using it despite the law saying I shouldn't have it gives me some leeway. I'm gonna pick up a tactical pen though. Not actually a weapon or designed to hurt like mace, so it's only an issue if it's got an side made for stabbing.

That said, there's also the issue of client contracts. If an incident happens on a contract site (this one didn't have any of the physical altercation there), then I'd at least end up being removed from that site for breaking protocol by having a weapon.

Actually, it's really common for security to need to have the police remove people from places, since there's a lot of things preventing us from physically removing people from places without good reason. Lawsuits, mostly.

Twice. Well, one guy was really drunk and tried to swing at me but it was like those choreographed attacks in video games where you have ample time to walk the two steps out of the way.

There was some old guy who was like, if you imagined a really dirty Axl Rose as a thin guy in his 60s. He tried drinking on my property, I moved him, he went to the other side of the building, I moved him again, moved to the other side of my building, them went to move him and he punched my chest so I maced him. Got chewed out some for having the mace because paperwork.

The other time was last November or December. I woke a guy up and he told me to get away, I did, then he charged at me and that ended up in an actual fight. No real injuries there, soreness that needed icing and ibuprofen but no bruises that time, and only a tiny bit of spot bleeding along my gums from being socked once or twice.

Oh, the police wouldn't bother me over using a weapon. It's the clients who would freak out if it was used on a site that explicitly specified it as an unarmed site without exception.

No criminal risks. And as long as it's not like, me pulling out a can of mace and spraying a crowd at random, I'd not risk my license. But it's a lot simpler to just keep something that can reasonably be explained for having on you, like those metal flashlights that have a grip that makes it so you can swing hard with it in a pinch.

I figured something was going to happen so I made sure to go there while the bar was still open and the guard was nearby. Never chatted with him before then, but it's one of those things between security guards working nights, we're the only ones looking out for each other and making our presence known to other guards helps keep us all safe. Still surprised at how well having the cell phone in my left hand worked out, since it let me get that really good guard despite being grabbed on to.

Like 99% of them are confiscated by the TSA and a lot also would be confiscated for the duration of your visit to a courthouse, etc. But you could definitely inquire.

As for what they are, heavy duty refillable pen where the pen side tends to have a sturdy end that can be used for jabbing soft flesh with, won't stab but could be used to break a skull with certain models. The other end is usually a flat end for blunt impact, to slam down onto something like a person's head.

Been working over 3 years and had it happen 3 times. It's always men with anger issues. Or in this case, probably also a tiny ego. Why else would a guy shorter than me give his name and "promise" to hurt me? He probably never won a fight in his life without getting an edge like he was going for.

cops later got ahold of him after hassling people further down the prom. police reports stated he was practicing his religion which was total BS.
