But no one serious is advocating for unregulated capitalism, so he'd be attacking a strawman if he insists on that point. The global poverty rate has been declining for decades. It's blatantly obvious that in this capitalist world we're eliminating poverty, not increasing it. The worldwide data shows this but good luck getting him to understand that basic fact. We can say capitalism doesn't address poverty enough by itself, but that's a very different thing than being the cause of poverty. It's the equivalent of saying saying band-aids cause people to bleed out. Point is, Capitalism gives everyone the greatest chance to succeed. The majority of the homeless in capitalist states are due to mental illness and unless we bring back asylums, we can't keep them in homeless shelters against their will.
