Back when I tried dating apps, when I saw a girl that has travelling as their few hobbies/interests/likes to do, on their dating app profile, I swipe no right away.

I mean, I myself go abroad once every 1-2 years but I don't go around saying I like to travel because it sounds like something you do often.

I used to feel that way about travelling and I actually broke up with a long term gf because she wanted to travel more/work overseas after enjoying university exchange in Europe whereas I was happy staying put.

Funnily enough after breaking up with her, I had no baggage/burden and ended up doing international secondments with my company around the world.

i just skimmed it, but damn great link. i completely agree with it. traveling is just a case of "the grass is always greener on the other side". i fall prey to that cycle too, it's a big part of why i make so many big purchases (watches, blazers, etc) to mix up and freshen my routine

This is not remotely true.

I mean, I guess for some it could be, but there is amazing value in seeing ancient architecture, poking around old cities, visiting beautiful landscapes, absorbing new cultures, tasting local cuisines, etc. Nothing wrong with also maintaining perspective and being grateful for what you have, but some of my fondest memories are sipping a cappuccino in some little Italian cafe, or chilling on an isolated stretch of beach in Croatia. These are incredible experiences I was lucky to have and hope to have one day again. It's a big beautiful world and to dismiss travel as just "grass is always greener" is extremely silly.

i've never said it wasn't fun. i just think it's extremely overhyped as a reoccurring hobby. i take a few vacations a year myself...but i don't have the "explore" mentality and don't get it. i just want to meet new different hot girls and try some new foods occassionally to mix it up.

Not gonna like, I haven't reread it in a while. But I remember also thinking it's about using travel as an escape. Like, going to a new place is fun and exciting. I think some also use it as a means of temporary escape at times. Which isn't necessary bad, sometimes that really is the goal, but it's something to be aware of. Traveling won't fix issues you're running away from, don't romanticize it

It's all points along a spectrum. Some people love it/crave it, others just appreciate it but wouldn't go out of their way so much to achieve it.

For me I actually only got into travelling a bit more as I got older but am not craving it as much as others.. but maybe because I enjoy my day to day life/job/etc that I don't see it as a need to escape reality but rather just to tick things off a bucket list.

This certainly puts things into perspective. Didn't realize a lot of people travel to find happiness. I don't ever travel, but I plan on starting after I get my returns and really I just want to enjoy some solitude.

It's true that traveling won't necessarily allow you to escape personal problems, but at the same time the distance from familiar surroundings can give you a valuable perspective from which to assess things and some insight that goes towards identifying problems, what's important, and even developing a sense of the gratitude that's mentioned

I don't think it's ever bad to shun new experiences and the lessons they can provide
