Pray for me CEmen and CEsters. She had an old work exchange account on her work new iphone phone that she wanted me to remove. In my attempts to do so I deleted all her contacts which were associated with that exchange account >________> trying to figure out how to back it all up. she said she did the back up yesterday from her old phone to the new one but fucked something up on the old phone and now the old phone misses the 2k contacts. i don't use icloud so i'm not savvy on all this lol ooooopsiiiieeees

She came from a previous company, so I suppose with help from the other companies IT it could be done? She currently can no longer connect to that exchange server or something. I honestly don't know how that all works, I don't really handle or work with the email system at all other than ensuring end users have the app installed. All she wanted to do was back up her contacts from her old phone to the new one but it also backed up the exchange account profile which doesn't have a delete button for some reason. I guess the contacts are tied to the exchange account and when I deactivate (but not deleted) the exchange account it deleted the contacts and I just absentmindedly hit ok. The fact that her old phone is also missing the 2k contacts is what's spooking me and I hope icloud backups have more than one...

That's..really bad...that's something that can get you axed. Blame it on something else if you can't recover. Blame it on her phone, blame it on her last company remotely wiping her info or something.

Yup that's exactly what happened. The phone has a local copy of the Exchange account and contacts so it can handle a disconnect from the Exchange server. When you remove the Exchange server profile from her phone, it removes everything related to that profile. It's a very easy thing to trip over and I can assure you that many IT people had to learn this lesson the hard way.

She'll need to contact her old company and hope that they haven't deleted her old mailbox yet. If they still have it, they can export her contacts to a text file or something and email it to her.

thank you. that is indeed the correct grammar, right?

Anyways yeah thanks guys lol. We'll see how it goes. She went into a meeting so the only options I have left are:

1. Ask her to enter the password for the exchange account on her phone and pray it works.

Failing that...

2. Sign her out of her Apple ID on the iphone and then sign back in, and hope when the phone merges with iCloud that the contacts sync back.

Failing that...

3. Have her see if she can reach out to her old company and if they can help her get signed back into the exchange account just so she can merge the contacts with her phone and then disable it.

Failing that....

4. Shit myself.

Thankfully in the company I work for, the worst case scenario would be me moved to a shitty undesirable location. They really don't like to fire people and give poor workers plenty of chances. I'm also a team lead so I get some leeway but this obviously looks really bad for me.

Thanks for the breakdown, this is exactly what occurred. She ended up calling an old IT contact that might be able to hook her up and judging by her conversation she should be able to get to her contacts again but it didn't seem clear to me how or if it would be successful. They chit chatted about a lot of off topic things as well..

I think I'm lucking out incredibly hard in that the CEO is very nice and friendly and cutting me some slack... She appeared comfortable enough to continue talking while I fiddled with her phone, casually changing the subject to things like what's good to eat for lunch. In the end after I exhausted all options she stated she'll just see what she can do and that we'd stay in touch.

I owned up to the mistake and trouble and just explained it seems that when trying to remove the exchange account like she requested that the contacts were synced to the exchange account, unbeknownst to me, and disabling the account removed the contacts. She accepted my apology and was sorta just like "well damn that sucks".

My heart is still beating a lil faster than normal but I think if I just chill out I'll be alright >__> I really do feel qualified for my role and do a good job but this sort of work isn't part of what I'm supposed to do. Regardless it's a CEO and I'm the team lead so sometimes you gotta step out of your role but I made the mistake of making a simple fucking up while trying to avoid just saying "sorry I can't assist you with that".

im impressed old company was willing to help given its potentially their intangible asset (customer lists). That being said Ive seen this before even at my own company where default setting once you install work profiles is for contacts to be saved to work profile contacts directory which means when you leave or remove the profile, you lose the contacts too.

Me too, which is why I'm sorta still concerned the issue isn't resolved. I can't really transcribe what the whole conversation was like as I was busy messing with the phone but it almost sounded like to me the IT person over the phone was going to send her a link to a specific app the CEO can purchase for $3 and use to prevent this from happening again, NOT that she was sending her a link to re-sync to the exchange server or a link to obtain the contact list... lmao I don't even know maaaan...

Yeah. I'm lucky and feel super fortunate lol. Traditionally, I don't need to interact with the CEO at my site all too often. If there's any needs with any C-level employees the executive assistants reach out to me and we do our thing and that's that, so it's always important to me to do a good job with any personal interaction with C-level employees, few as they are. Hopefully this first impression doesn't bite me or my team in the ass somewhere down the line.
